External flash Problem with 30D

    I just got a new 30D and I have a problem with my flash - it won't! It's a cheapo Vivitar, but it worked fine with the 300D in the hotshoe, but on the 30D it flashes very weakly. It works fine when activated from the PC socket.
    I had intended to get a 430 EX in February, but I don't want to splash out on that if it's going to be useless.
    I got the camera off Ebay (hong Kong) so bringing it back to the shop is outta the question.

    Any ideas?

    Possibly will only work properly when manually triggered. Something to do with the camera trying to talk to the flash and i-ttl stuff and all that. I recall someone in WCC having this issue before and it came down to canon wanting you to use only canon flashes essentially.

    Thanks...I'll try out some of the canon flashes and see if they are oK

    Some flashes allow you to update their firmware to sort out these compatibility problems.

    It may be only an Olympus thing but it works. Dose canon/nikon offer this too ?
