100 + macro lens question.

At the moment I've got extension tubes which I use with a 70-200 lens for macro.
I will eventually need a dedicated macro lens ,so I'm wondering what type of light do you need for a 100mm+ macro lens?.

I'd love to go for the 150 macro lens ,but from using and reading about macro lenses ,the further you are away the more out of focus the shot.
Also can a macro lens be used to take candids etc ,or are they generally too sharp??

    Light and plenty of it.......
I took this set with the 100mm macro (unless otherwise stated), all handheld. All the exif data is there so you can make your own mind up. To be honest I could have used a bit more DoF for some of em, but at such small distances camera movement can become very pronounced, and even affect focus if your body rocks back slightly, so I opted for the higher shutter speed instead.

I would never have been able to get these shots with a tripod btw so that wasn't an option.
It's the kind of photography that cries out for a tripod but unless your doing still life rarely affords you the time to use one. So you're left with the option of upping the iso or opening up the aperture. I like to print big so I went with opening up instead of increasing grain.

A good summers day is ideal, my macro has been in the bag for almost all of the Winter so far and I can't envisage using it again until Spring.
For candids the lens itself is fairly compact and allows a nice ƒ2.8 aperture. And you can never get too much sharpness!

I've been thinking of a macro lens in the 100+ range. What's good for a Canon?

I got the Canon 100mm 2.8 second hand during the summer. I haven't used it a lot but what I have taken with it turned out great. Here are two pics. Sorry about the size but in order to see how sharp it is I think you need to see them at a large size.
