Idiot wants to know what camera to buy..

So I'm getting a camera from my folks, (I may as well be honest!) officially for Christmas, but it's not bought yet.

I'm only getting interested in photography, and I know next to nothing. But I do want to get more than a snapshot camera - a decent enough one that isn't madly expensive or more fancy than I need.

I'm looking for a digital, I'm almost sure, and I'm spending between a hundred and fifty and two hundred, or thereabouts.

Any recommendations? I'm a bit blinded by the information in leaflets and such.

I'd say keep an eye on the general section on adverts.ie . People sell your kinda price range cameras there. If you'd rather buy new, something with a quick moving screen and as many adjustable controls as you can get (aperture/shutter speed/iso), and don't get bogged down by megapixels!

Can't believe that camera is so cheap now! Brother bought his for €350 only couple of months ago.

I would recommend this camera. Very easy to use for beginner and lots more features that you can learn as you go along.

I have the older S5500 and would recommend this camera to anyone.

The 10x optical zoom is brilliant and the S5600 has the anti-shake that makes taking shots in low light easier.

Its been at that price(ish) for quiet a while now.

The "anti-shake" is simply a fast shutter high iso wide aperature combination though...not real IS.
