A moral issue...

You know those make-your-own pizzas in supermarkets? You get your base and add your toppings> Well, we were making one up today in the local (Name deleted) in a slightly larger-than-normal cardboard box (out of the yellow plasticky things, I presume). Anyway, pizza was 7 or 9 inch and came in at €3.40ish. Then, on a whim, we deicded to weigh it without the box and it came in at 2.75!! We put the lesser prcie tag on it and carried on.

Now, the issue. Is this stealing? I mean, we weren't going to eat the box... Ok, you pay for packaging anyway, but 20%-odd of the sticker price?

I felt a bit ripped-off and was genuinely surprised by the difference, but the vote went with the lower price tag,

    Comments?

    €0.65 for a box?!

I wouldn't bat an eyelid if I saw someone doing what you did tbh, probably just laugh.

Personally wouldn't do it though, I'm actually far too honest for my own good.

I always thought they were setup to take the difference away from the total cost.. Giving you the cheaper option. Clearly not..

Id do it, and I wouldnt call it stealing either! :P

Isnt the box meant to be "tarred" ie you hit Pizza on the menu and deducts the weight of the box as a preset

Its not you thats stealing its the shop, box should be "tarred" or some word like it.

If you can steal so easily, the retailer mustn't be losing any sleep over it. Don't beat yourself up about it.

You weren't stealing, all you did was stop the store from stealing from you.

The scales should be tared, but in reality probably aren't. In fairness, I'm not adverse to holding onto vegetables just a little when weighing them

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

Tare is usually automatic and is per-PLU on the scales, but you never know how well some of the non-big-supermarket systems are set up.

Next time you're there put something on the scales without pressing the button and then when you press it see does the weight change while it's printing the label.

The yellow things probably weight a good bit less than the cardboard box too - no harm done i'd say!

the plastic bags you put your veg in used to cost a penny...not sure what they are now in cent ;)

    Weigh an empty box.
If the cost comes out at zero the shop is playing by the rules.
If It comes out at anything else they are cheating you.

Thanks for the replies... Thought the shop might have been in the wrong, but will try the weighing of the box on it's own tirck (never thought of that)

The scales don't take away any money for a box. I used to work on the deli in Tesco and if you weigh the box on it's own it comes to about 30c.

I used to make my own one with a load of toppings and then just weight the box on it's own to get the price.

I went in once after I finished to get one and I think I really pissed off the guy behind the counter because I was so specific about what I wanted and how I wanted it added to the pizza.

Well, first off, I simply HAD to read a Thread titled "Moral Delimma" by aomeone whose user name is Ikky Poo2! That in itself is worth a laugh!

Secondly.... OMG! You're telling me you don't lick the box when you've finished the pizza?:p

Stealing? What? A box? lol. I work in a supermarket and customers stealing pizza boxes is the least of what we've to worry about. Try guys trying to sneak out with a trolley full of beer :D

Where I work they are free but if you don't use them for fruit or something that might leak you have to pay the 15 cent plastic levy. Most people don't know this as the staff rarely enforce it.

How did does everyone know the box wasn't tarred... am I missing something here ?

Open to correction here, but I think they mean that the machine should have been programmed to deduct the weight of the box before calculating the price. In other words, the pizza on its own and the pizza in the box would have arrived at the same price.

    .....how?

If it were tarred, then the machine weighs it, subtracts weight of box from the number, then displays that. It doesn't weigh it, look and see if there's a box there, subtract the weight of the box if it sees one and then display it.

That may or may not make sense, due to it being 5 o' clock

no it shouldn't. the machine takes, lets say 20 grams off the final weight to account for the box. if there is a box there it'll display the proper price, if not it'll "think" that part of the weight of the pizza is a box and display 20 grams less than it should. it doesn't have electronic eyes that can see a box and only subtract its weight if there's one there

op, you paid less than you should've done but i would have have done the same :D

if you go out for the night and forget to turn your alarm on and i find your spare key under the flower pot it'd make it fairly easy to steal from your house. would it be ok since you made it so easy to steal from you?

    simple solution

    re-use the box

no moral dilemma and you are helping to save the environment too

ps. when you buy bananas do you break off as much of the stalk as you can ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,350 ✭✭✭Lust4Life

Ha! And peanuts with no shells.

OMG! How do you buy your eggs?:p

whenever I buy something from a salad bar I always pop the box on and press the "salad" button to get the sticker price weighed as quickly as possible and it always knocks off about 30 grams or so.. but I figure that the price is so inflated here in Dublin than it is out of town that it's their own fault for not weighing the salad at the checkout.
./edit also what's with having to pay for a knife and fork when purchasing a salad?! If I was only taking the cutlery I would understand it but it should be free with the salad!

I'm going to start doing this! I wonder how much I'll save?

Ha, youre having moral problems with that?!

    Beat this...
Whenever I get those make-yerself pizzas, I just get the pizza and box and slap some sauce on it. *Then* I weigh it. Then I proceed to put on all my toppings :D

    And no, I don't give a sh1t

what about salad bars that offer different sized boxes. Are the scales smart enough to deduct the weight of the correct sized box??;)

If I had been charged that much for a box, I'd have burned down the shop and then the hospital all the victims went to.

So no, I don't think you should be worried.

If you feel that strongly about the cost of a box, next time you go to the shop you should asks for the cornflakes to be removed from the packaging and placed directly into your pockets.

Not much to tell really. Happens fairly regularly though, security nearly always nabs them. But some of these thieves are professionals.

Best one I ever heard was a man and women who came to a checkout with two trolleys full of goods. After the trolleys were packed up the guy preceded to go out to the car with the first one, while his wife, with the second trolley, stayed behind to pay. She then realised she had forgotten something and went back to get it. All this seemed perfectly normal to the staff, except...

    She didn't come back.

Of course, by the time the staff realised this they were well gone with the first trolley, which they had packed with the most expensive items, beer, etc. The second one which they left behind was stuffed with crisps and crap.

    Clever b**tards :D

Pfft, amatuer. How about taking the brocoili, leaving yourself with a bag of florets? ah yes the scabby women I used to serve in Dunnes, they would teach you a thing or two. Funny part (I guess) was it was always the women who wanted to look like they had cash that were the meanest. Gold card owners in particular.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,378 ✭✭✭✭jimmycrackcorm

Weigh scales are loaded with preset prices and don't subtract anything. The question is whether the pre-loaded price takes into account the box weight. However if the price displays cost per weight then you are perfectly entitled to weighing the pizza on it's own.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,209 ✭✭✭✭JohnCleary

Jeez dorks, reading all this cack makes it no wonder that boards.ie posters get grief, ye're not even amatures!!
