I think all current one have a ethernet port, and as for linux, depends on the distro. I use ubuntu on a dell inspiron 6400. Check out the laptop forum, linux forum, and maybe http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

Recommend picking up a Thinkpad on ebay. T40 or T41 (1.6-1.8 centrino, 512 ram, 40gig HD) go for around e450. T42 or T43 go for 50 more. great machines for taking a battering and linux friendly - checkout http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/ThinkWiki for more ideas - if you don't want to do the ebay thing checkout SCR Computers (opposite old john players factory on SCR) - Dan usually has some used thinkpads in stock - give him your budget and he will sort you out. best of luck with it.

I always like the t40 series too, with secondhand laptops the batteries arn't always great though. getting a popular make of laptop will probably mean better linux driver support etc. have you checked that your old laptop isnt still under warrenty or the repair cost, sometimes companies can be pretty fair if you can get on to the right person and explain the situation
