A Basic Media Server advice

I have a few spare parts around and have been flirting with the idea of creating a media server in the house.

What I would ideally like is to be able to stream video (mostly XviD) to TVs around the house whilst broadcasting music throughout the house.

I'm currently thinking of getting a cheap second hand Xbox and flashing and replacing its dashboard so that it can play XviD files, this would be networked to a spare PC that I have which is currently operating as my file dump with 2 x 250gb HDDs. I'll add a 320gb external drive to that to ensure acres of space in the future. This PC would serve as my download centre and also as my radio broadcaster. I'm contemplating hooking up an FM Broadcaster to it and have Pandora do its thing 24/7.

I know its a very messy setup but what I want to know is whether or not it could work? I'm on a tight budget of €300 which currently will be divided out on Xbox (€100), HDD (€110) and FM Broadcaster (€40 odd)

It will work fine. Run XMBC on the Xbox and clarkconnect on the server. PII with 256Mb ram will be fine.

If you plan on using the Xbox get a wireless controller at some point as the controller cables are a major pain & cause a mess.

Logitech made some great ones hard to find though.

Would one of the old Xbox remotes suffice?

Yeah might do I'd head over to the XBMC sites forums & either ask or have a look around.

Edit: There is a thread on where to buy in the Xbox forum but Whitedog Games also have them in your are unable to locate them anywhere else and they do deliver to IE.
