Epson Printer - Kaput?

    Hi all,

My brother bought me a Epson Stylus Photo Printer (R245) last January. Its been working fine until recently. A few weeks ago when I was trying to print a photo it was not able to print when it took the paper in. I cant recall the exact error, but it fed the paper in, and then stopped. No matter how much or how little paper I put in, or aligned it -- it still messed up. I was only able to get it to print when I used printers options (on the small little screen the printer had) to take in a page (not to sure of the exact option) and spit it out. I then re-tried printing, and it worked. And has done since now.

I had A4 sheets in to print invoices, and when it took it in, it just wasn't printing and eventually spat out the page empty, took in another page and printed it slightly at an angle as if the page went in wrong. The next print job was fine. It was also printing like it took in to much paper, when it didnt. I checked and I dont see any obvious problems, no paper jamming etc.

So I called in another paper test to see if it fixes problems (cause I was starting to print photos after the invoices), and it wasn't able to do it. It came up with a picture of 3 wheels, and a simple code "E90" which google has given me no information on. The status monitor said there was a general error, clear any outstanding print requests (none) and leave the printer offline for a while and try again. So I did that and Iv blown around to knock of any loose materials, but nothing obvious anyway. So I turned it back on and no errors. When the cartridges move around I did hear a sound like a chunk but no errors appear and I thought maybe I was just being over-sensitive trying to hear sounds that were always there but I find them strange now when something goes wrong! So I tried a simple print - a small text file. It made a few noises to get going and then that "chunk" noise. It stopped, and the E-90 code appeared alongside a red X and 3 wheels. (Mechanical wheels you see in clocks, I cant think of the name of them, they all connect to each other).

The only thing I did today was print a CD Label and change some cartridges (to genuine ones, purchased in PCWorld). I never interfere with the inners, and just simply load paper, print, and change cartridges when required to genuine Epson ones. Any ideas whats wrong?!

Notice from Epson Status Monitor (On PC):-
Delete all print jobs and turn the printer off. Remove any foreign objects from inside the printer. After a few minutes, turn the printer back on.

Firstly; There is no print jobs.

Secondly; I did turn of the printer, waited and tried again. Nothing.

Thirdly; I cant see any foreign objects. Seems fine to me!

    Fourthly; Refer to secondly!

Only think I can suggest is to clean the main metal bar the printer head slides along, maybe try a small bit of oil or some light lubricant on it, this helped with 2 epson printers I had before. It sounds like something is jamming in the printer mechanics and causing the thing to shut down

If all else fails, ring Epson directly before the warranty expires.

I had an Epson printer that failed after 6 months. I rang Epson, and they had couriered a new printer to me the next day, and the courier took the old one! Was very good service, and possibly better than trying the workaround of going to where it was bought.

Only downside is that you will need the receipt, which I imagine you may not have as it was a gift.

    Hi,

Ya I contacted them and they told me about that service. Not free tho, costs £10!

They suggested that the print cartridges may not be seated correctly, but I cant get it to move over to check :P Also, the bar it slides across on is fine.
