Thinking of making the jump from Windows to Mac...

    Hello,

I'm a long time Windows and *nix user.

I like XP (the way it is right now - stable and secure - I know it used to be terrible.)

The direction Microsoft are going has really disturbed me. Things like only releasing DirectX 10 on Vista, forcing hardware manufacturers to create "premium content" aware hardware, and basically turning the OS into a DRM lover.

In a nutshell, their direction seems to be about the OS controlling the user, rather than the user controlling the OS.

    I think this is terrible.

So, this is what I'm thinking...

I need to buy a new laptop. I will spend up to €1500 (can get the VAT written off.) I would like to buy a Mac, stick XP on a partition, and possibly Ubuntu on another partition.

Mac would become my main OS, XP would be for the odd game, Ubuntu would be for screwing around.

    1. I mainly use SSH, Office, FTP and browsing. All are cool on Mac...?
    2. Will €1500 get me a decent spec laptop?
    3. Can I have 3 OS's on the laptop? **I am OK with just having Mac only**
    4. Do you think Apple will go the way of Microsoft, changing their OS to be really restrictive and bending over for the Music/Movie people?

I like having maximum control over my computer. I don't like it telling me what to do.

    Any advice/thoughts appreciated.

    Thanks.

Yes, you can have three OS's on a laptop.

As far as your budget, the 15" MacBook Pro, which is what I have, starts from about €1500 + VAT. If you have someone in your family who is a student or teacher, you can easily get an 8% student discount. It's got a very nice, high resolution display with a choice of glossy or matte finish, Intel's latest Core 2 Duo processor, and a graphics card that's good for gaming, so you can play the latest Windows games (though I've taken to gaming on the Nintendo Wii lately, but that's a different topic).

Anyway, I got one back in March, and it's the best laptop I've ever owned, bar none. Along with the IBM Thinkpad, it's the only laptop I can recommend.

You can order online at http://www.apple.com/iestore/ with free courier delivery. To get the educational discounts, click the "Education - Savings for students, faculty and staff" link on the right.

well i'm going to stick with xp for the foreseeable future and if i change it won't be to vista. All i've heard is negative press from it and their content protection technologies But from what I've seen, read, and heard, not enough people are really seeing the important pros and cons of the new OS beyond the purely cosmetic changes.
