How noisy should a 360 be?

Probably a stupid question, I know. I got a 360 premium bundle from Xtravision (hard drive, gears of war, splinter cell, PES6, that other racing game etc) and its working grand from what I can see, but I'm a bit surprised at the noise the console makes.

None of my friends have a 360 so I don't have any reference to compare it against, but I've never noticed the demo consoles in stores making noise (although that could just be because of the everyday bustle in stores anyway).

So I was just wondering, is the console supposed to run silently or are there usually very audible noises as its accessing the hard drive and running the disc? Its not a major issue, its just that I wasn't expecting noise - its louder than my old PS2 and I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of a DVD player - ie, practically silent.

u can hear noises alright - i am sitting maybe 6 feet away from it. but i wudn't be hearing hard drive being read tho.
but i think it's normal to hear that constant fan working

Yea, the xbox is very noisy! I wouldnt recommend watching too much DVD's on it. The noise does go down a bit when DVD's are in though, I think another fan activates or something! Im not too sure on the details though.

There is 3 fans in the console so you're bound to hear noise. It's not rocket science :D

Yes, but its more than just fan noise - the sound when the hard drive is accessed seems quite loud.

I think that is mostly the DVD drive spinning up that you can sometimes hear, but you can quieten it a little if it's really bothering you.

    Quiet your Xbox 360

Personally I just go for the turn the volume up option which is cheaper, easier and does not mess with any warranties.

Yup is a noisy little unit, nosier in fact then my own HTPC.

Watch out for those cooling guides as you can kiss goodbye your warranty and one of those external coolers for it recently was actually damaging the console by burning it.

Don't hear the hard drive too much only when in the Xbox Live arcade when navigating the games or loading one will you hear it I find.

It's mostly the fans that are the problem but I wouldn't expect a quieter version of the xbox until they shrink the chips next year.

The fans are loud alright but should I be hearing a constant noise of what sounds like a disc? It sounds like a 10 year old PC.

I don't know if this is related but I'm playing FIFA 2007 regularly and after about an 1-2 hours the game gets a bit laggy. I could understand this if it was online. it sounds like a problem with the disc but it's brand new and not a scratch on it.

Some units apparently have DVD drives that spin the discs constantly at full speed, whether it's reading from them or not.
