Tendonitis

Apparently I have "tendonitis", but it doesnt seem to be healing, what can I do?

I've been going to the gym for 2 months now in an effort to build up, so I'm fairly new to this. I was shown all the equipment by an instuctor and take care to do all of the machines correctly. I'm on a fairly intensive upper body regime as I'm a hard gainer. I noticed a pain in my left elbow after a few sets last week. It wasn't bad at first but once I was resting the pain got much worse. It's a sort of blunt pain thats hard to place deep in my elbow and going up my tricep. I use this muscle alot as I'm doing 3 or 4 sets of 7 upper body machines. An instructor told me it's tedonitis and to rest it for 2 days an it should be ok. Its now over a week and its just as bad if not worse. Any sort of activity with my left arm and I start to feel that pain grow after it. I really don't want to leave it any longer before I go back to the gym. Does anyone know any quick fixes for this kind of problem and what might have caused it? Any info would be well appreciated cheers.

Tendonitis is a repeatative strain injury, when you train your muscles gain strenght more quickly than your tendons which can lend to this type of injury, tbh the best thing to do if you think you have tendonitis is to rest it (you can use anti-inflammatories etc) but to be on the safe side get it checked out by a doctor/physio....

Sounds very similar to an injury I picked up on xmas eve (as a result of drunken horseplay, not work out related). 4 days later and its still quite sore. I'm not taking any chances at all so I'm not doing any upper body work till tuesday.

Well you could try acupuncture. But if you do go to one make sure that they are a registered practitioner, so at least you know they are properly trained, adhere to a code of ethics and practice and are insured. check out the TCM Council of Ireland site for a list of registered acupuncturists nationwide. They have a list of members online, so all you have to do is choose one near to you. Best of luck with it.

I happen to be an acupucnturist and TCM practioner, specialising in sports injuries and have dealt with several cases of tendonitus successfully. I've treated several people from boards and am fully registered. I am also a member of the Traditional Chinese Medical Council of Ireland as listed on there website above. I'm listed in Dublin 6 Pm if you want and we can discuss the details. :)

I had tendonitis in my wrists when I was a teenager and had quarterzone injections every few months over the term of a year or so. It went away and hasn't come back again.

    go see a physio
i had one or two soft tissue type injuries over the years which i trained through, looking back it was stupid and i turned them into longer term injuries. muscle grows a lot faster than tendons so go see a doc/physio and maybe ease back on the weight for a few months.

I got tendoitis in my foot a couple of years back. It took a couple of weeks to get back to normal.

    -Rest-
At the time the doctor said to place my foot in the hottest water i could bare as this would cause an increase of blood flow to the area and help with the healing.

I have it where my thumb meets my hand about six months now due to keyboard usage (hitting the space bar). You have to stop the usage that is causing the injury and train in a different way. I've been using a wrist splint for the last few months and changed the way I type (a lot softer and using my other thumb as well) and although hasn't gone, it has improved significantly.

1st step is to stop doing the exercise that is causing the injury before it gets any worse. Talk to a fitness expert about a different way of exercising that part of your body.

what i thought was tendonitis ...having swelling in both my forearms ... was in fact a back problem... a trapped nerve causing the pain in my arms...
I found using the computer mouse clicking was killing me.... I bought a foot switch which i use everyday at work and home ... it really helps and let my arms heal... gym also helps ...swimming builds a strong back
