Anybody run the goal mile? I ran it in 8:32 (last year 7:57) carrying a calf injury. My three sons ran it with me and I was lapped by two of them! First home, 19, clocked 5:35 (last year 4:44). Next, age 13 (yes, he lapped me, too!), clocked 6:23 (last year 7:04). And finally, my 11 year-old ran 9:36, and I only passed him on the third lap. He ran 13 minutes 2 years ago.

Basically, I had no problems CV wise, but my calves restricted me from running a good bit faster.

    Anyone else? :)

P.S. I ran the first goal mile in 1982 in 4:48.

Raheny Shamrock have a Goal Mile with a very long history.
The Race has been on going for 47 years...which is amazing since Raheny Shamrock was founded in 1958. Orginally the club members would run on christmas day from Raheny village to the little willy hostipal in Balydolye, thats about 3 Miles. They would give presents into the hostipal and then the members would have a race back to the village. This only lasted about 8 - 10 years. So since approx 1967, the club have had a race down the main avenue in St.Annes Park. The Avenue messaures 1,422M. Just shy of 1500M. This race is very competive as the returning athlete's (scholarships, etc) love to beat the local's.
We also present trophy's to the winners in the Senior Men and Women's, Junior Men and Junior Women. The trophy's have been donated to the club by club members families. We also have two specail catrergories. they are
Time Predition - Awarded to the Person who comes closest to their predicted time
Parent and Child....This is obivous and this brings major competition to the race.
The Race became a part of the goal miles 5 years ago. This year we raised €4,000 for goal.

Full results are on the raheny site.

And also Brian Peppard is the course record holder, brian regularly posts on the website here. Brian's family donated the "Billy Peppard Cup" for this race. The trophy is presented to the race winner. Just to quote Brian's sister as she said at the presentation.
"My Brother is worried sick for a month that his record may be broken at this time of year."

I did the UCD mile with my sister this year. It was good fun - I went from my first race, a 7.75k run in the summer, to the marathon in october so doing such a short distance was a very nice change :) Though I've still no idea what target pace to actually try for at any distance yet!

Did it in 6:22. Hopefully I'll beat that by a country mile next year :) Considering I couldn't run a mile a year ago, I'm optomistic!

It was very well organised. I wasn't expecting to be able to do even those sort of paces with what looked like a few hundred people on the track, but people really stuck to sensible lanes.

    Thanks for that Dave!!!!

I didn't get to the presentation, but I guess my sister was being Honest!!!

Still, the record has been there since 1990, so I think it is about time I handed over the honour... maybe in 2007!!!! I can't cling to past glory for ever!!

    Happy New Year to all,

    Domer (Brian)

What is your record for the mile?

The distance is not quite a mile. It measures 1,422M. Just shy of 1500M. My time was 3:36. This equates to approx a 4:04 mile... how I wish I could still run that fast!!!

On the new tallaght track some reasonable times quickest of the day was 4.40 with four or five lads going sub 5.I Myself ran 4.59. Was a god way to break in the new tartan track

6'07 at Belfield. A couple of seconds faster than last year, but I was hoping for under 6. Was quite crowded on the track and I didn't start at the front. Didn't really have another quick lap in me.

I just ducked inside the fabled 7-minute barrier at Irishtown - yay for me :pac: Much less crowded than Belfield and a nice morning. 8-10 'heats' with one fast race comprising the Crusaders lads.
