During installation the following message appears...

    Feature: Rome:Total War
    Component:
    File:
    Error: Catastrophic Error

It seems to happen when the installation reaches C:\..\..\Rome-Total War\data\packs\battle_open.pak

Has anyone seen this before?? Or know of any remedy??

heres a few tips that might help (simple but yet i must mention it ) check that your cd isnt scratched mostly errors for certain files are cd wise. google the error with the game name and see if any of their game forums have that mentioned. if that doesnt work i recall that you can send off your cd for a replacment for a small fee and a tech store near you might have some special stuff that repairs small scratches. also check if you have enough free space.

I had this problem with bf2142, it was because i had a iso program installed ( poweriso), and the games security software seen it, and must have though i was about to copy the game.

All i did was uninstall it and it installed fine.

Check the process manager are their any duplicate instances of msiexec.exe running in the background ?

Do you have Windows Installer 3.1 installed ?

Try copying all the files from all CD's into one folder on the hard drive and see if installs it will still need the CD in the drive to play the game of course.

Bar that cannot think of anything else you want to try the games official forums, someone there may be able to help there is even a sub forum for install/patch issues.

What is that an old MS-DOS title ?

You know there is a small chance the RAM could be dodgy which could explain the copy errors and now random crashing. Try testing the RAM with Memtest+ to rule it out just in case.

Do check out the official Total War forum supposedly the copying all the files from the CD's onto the HD to install trick works in many cases.

Sounds like a security feature problem, maybe not even a security feature in rome but some other game? Any virtual drives installed (daemon tools or anything like that, or any cd dvd software for that matter)?
Might try looking for processes that are out of place in task manager, google them and then kill them(if the google god tells you they're not critical).
