During a marathon session in Smyths toystore (Fonthill) last night, I espied a mini home cinema (2.1) centre which had MP4 emblazened across it. It also sported a USB port on the front. Can't remember the make but I'd never heard of it before.

I think it's a Photar HT-6108. Not much about it on the interweb. Chinese make I think.

It doesn't give a make/model. Is this the one?

    Hey all.
    Merry Xmas.

Can anyone confirm that it actually plays MPEG4 movies? Smyths website seems to be the only place that mentions that feature.

    Cheers.

Well it said it on the box in-store.

I just saw about 50 of them in the Limerick branch, but priced @ €59.99. It definitely says mpeg4 on the box. Link.

    Quite a bargain, considering you get 2x 6W + 1x 15W speakers with it.

Would an mpeg4-compatible player play back DivX/Xvid formats, as this suggests? Next door in Maplins they had a (very expensive) in-car player with a logo that said both, yet the horse's arse of a salesman insisted that 'mpeg4 just means DVD'/'all DVDs are mpeg4'...

No DVD Video is not MPEG4. They are MPEG2. MPEG4 is a sort of higher compression, more video with less space being used, eg DivX or Xvid.

DVDs are MPEG2. DivX and Xvid both implement the same spec (MPEG4 pt 2). For completeness, VCD are MPEG1. You can take the AVSEQ001.DAT file off a K/VCD and rename it to .mpg and it will play with your fave media player application.
    Edit: x-post with byte

So... an mpeg4-compatible player would play back DivX/Xvid?

Great, I'll print off the page Ruu linked to with the advertised price of €50.99 and march up there on Tuesday! :)

You can get an Archos in Curry's/PC World for €350, and then buy the two €19.99 unlocks from www.archos.com to enable the use of MP4's, DivX, H264, etc.

You wont need the plugin if you want to play DivX or XVids. The archos will play both formats out of the box
