I wouldn't include Casino Royale in that list personally.. Mine would be

Children of Men, Wind That Shakes the Barley, Pan's Labyrinth, the Departed (definately film of the year)

Children of Men, The Prestige, Stranger Than Fiction, Pan's Labyrinth have all been very good films.

I think it's actually been a fairly good year for film.

Little Miss Sunshine, Pan's Labyrinth. Haven't actually gone to many films this year, though.

A yes. Little Miss Sunshine was great too... I'm probably missing a few others as well.

Bad year for the big-budget studio product, pretty good year for the rest.

    No, that was last year.

To be honest, I think it's a good year if you can name five outstanding films. Look back at other years and you'll see that there wouldn't be many that would produce that many.

I didn't see a lot, but my favourites of this year would be:

    Children Of Men
    The Prestige
    Stranger Than Fiction

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,404 ✭✭✭qwertplaywert

    5 outstanding?
    -Stranger than Fiction
    -Borat
    -Casino Royale
    -Little Miss Sunshine
it would be 5 if i counted Snakes on a Plane.................so bad it was fantasic

the pretise would make it 6,only for the fact ithough christian bale was awful in it

Everyone seems to be forgetting "V For Vendetta"... definitely up there in my view anyway..

The Prestige, Children of Men, Pan's Labyrinth and The Fountain are four films that really impressed me this year. It's been a great year for directors. The Departed and Munich were also excellent, and most of what I saw has very rarely been below average.

It definitely wasn't a good year for remakes. The Wicker Man anyone? It was the most intentionally hilarious movie I've seen all year. The part where Nicholas Cage punches that manlike woman in the face and then dropkicks Leelee Sobieski had me on the floor laughing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,437 ✭✭✭Crucifix

Don't forget Snakes on a plane.
I think it's been a good year, I enjoyed many of the previously mentioned films, and there's still a few flicks out at the moment I want to see.

I agree, that film was hilarious.
Stealing the bike? Taking off the bear suit but leaving the bear feet on?

I think it's been decent enough. V For Vendetta, Children of Men, The Departed (although I wasn't as amazed by that as others) Little Miss Sunshine and Snakes On A Plane for the pure enjoyment factor. Some of the films I missed and plan on catching up on when they hit dvd are The Prestige, Pan's Labryinth and Borat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,383 ✭✭✭emeraldstar

Borat=quality....nah. It was funny enough, but not something I'd ever have any desire to watch again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

I don't think it was a great year. I enjoyed Borat but I don't know if it would be as good a second time around. Little Miss Sunshine was good too. I didn't really like the Departed, I didn't see what was so great about it

was V for vendetta this year?i tought it was last.........so i do HAVE 5 without snakes on................

    Excellent year, I thought.

    My favs:
    The Departed
    The Prestige
    Pan's Labrynth
    Children of Men
    Wind That Shakes The Barley
    Casino Royale
    Nacho Libre

How are people listing The Departed?? I thought it was completely over hyped!! NO desire to see that film again, went on for to long aswel. I think people are allowing themselves to be influenced by critics and the fact that it's a Scorsesse flick.

Little Miss Sunshine and The Prestige were the best I've seen this year IMO, though I didn't see Children of Men (gonna catch that as soon as possible).

PS- I though that Christian Bale was amazing in The Prestige. So much intensity! Hugh Jackman was kinda bland but still got the job done.

I thought it was a dreadful year for film releases.
I watched a few hundred new films and most of them were very poor.
Far too many slasher/teen horror films, animal based cgi films and gross out comedies.
Hardly any decent thrillers to speak of and many of the critically acclaimed films, like Children of Men and The Departed were very average .

Certainly don't think it's any worse than the last few years. Number of titles that I enjoyed this year:
'United 93', 'Children of Men', 'Little Miss Sunshine', 'Thank You For Smoking', 'Borat', 'The Prestige', 'The Departed', 'The History Boys'...

MisterAnarchy - releasing "quality" films in the US in December is nothing new. It happens every single year in a race to qualify for the Oscars and stick in the heads of Oscar voters. It's annoying in the sense of having everything bunched together and then a longer "dry" spell but it's something we get used to (least we get it somewhat more staggered over the next couple of weeks).

the departed.............wanted to see it.......was never released in dundalk

    as neither was tenatious d

in the dundlak democrat[one of dundalks 2 newspapers] iy said ,in a review of the departed, that it would not be shoing in dundalk due to on going rows between the progucder or something and the cinema chain

are the departed and tenatious d on the same promator/profuction company?

Only saw about a dozen films this year, so any comments on the year as a whole would be a bit rich. However, of the films I've seen, I really liked:

    V for Vendetta
    Borat
The Wind That Shakes the Barley
    Flags of Our Fathers

    While I enjoyed the following:
    The Departed
    United 93
    Munich
    Children of Men
    X-Men III

The only films I really disliked were Pirates II, Casino Royale and Mission Impossible III. The first two especially are SO overrated.

So all in all an OK year in the cinema for me.

// Almost forgot, I saw that horror flick where they die the same way in real life as they do in a computer game. That was pretty dire, but it made me laugh.

The second half of 2006 was a very good time for films. Some fantastic films were released. Pan's Labyrinth, Children of Men, The Departed and The Prestige were all in my top 5 of last year and they were all released in the autumn/winter season. It was a far far better year than 2007 is shaping up to be.

But as you've said, it was in the last part of the year, which we have yet to reach. I'm still quite hopeful, and I've already had some good flicks from directors who I haven't seen in years - "Zodiac", "Inland Empire" and (for me) "Sunshine". Looking forward to getting my hands on "The Fountain" as well.

You can add "Harsh Times" to that list as well.

    Harsh Times > Training Day!
