NTL (using a contractor) are laying pipes/cables on the road into Celbridge.
Does anyone know why? as the area is covered by chorus.

chorus have taken over NTL,in waterford, and i presume in galway as well, dont know about Dublin, and that is why NTL are carrying out work in your area for Chorus.

I've seen this too, theres some signs down at where the road from Pikes Bridge joins the Maynooth Road. Could be a reused sign but I doubt it. I'd suspect they're replacing the core between Celbridge and Maynooth - Maynooth was served by Celbridge's cable company pre-CMI, so I believe its fed off the Celbridge headend. Although that wouldn't explain the tower in Silken Vale...

They may actually be putting in a trunk between the two towns :p

No they haven't. UPC the parent company bought Chorus two years ago. They subsequently bought NTL and are now merging both to create a nationwide entity.

Thyey closed a call centre in Waterford and kept one in Limerick open.

I'd like to thank Chorus in Celbridge for introducing me to Sky.

One too many Christmases had a dent put in them for me pre 2001 (loss of signal between Stephen's Day and New Year) when I dropped Chorus like a hot brick and joined Sky instead.

Looks like however the whole process will be starting again in February when I'm taking over my apartment in Clane - however with the "Management Company" there I'm locked into the local analogue only cable company with no dish allowed - this is a company that when I spoke to them last year claimed that they did digital channels alright - "we've 18 of them down the cable"
