looking to convert divx and/or xvid into something that can be watched on regular dvd(vcd or svcd)but anything that i have tried before the quality is very poor(heavily pixelated).
Is there any good piece of software out there that can do a good job?

I use VSO Divx to DVD converter , very simple to setup and then just drag and drop the files , press start and it does the rest. very good results on it depending on the quality of your files.
google it and you might find a few rapidshare links

Divx Converter from DIVX.COM does a very acceptable job as does Nero Recode 2. There is also a free app "Super" from eRightSoft that is v.good especially as its free and can be used to co0nvery video files for a variity of formats(ipod, psp, mobiles ect), it is also simplicity itself to use. The one caveat about all this is your resulting video will only be as good as the original input and if you are inputting a divx file(320x240) and the output is 704x576 well the orignal file needs to be fairly decent. I used Nero Recode 2 to convert my last few divx format video files and the result was really excellent using Recodes default settings. On the other hand as has already been mentioned a DVD player that can play divx format videos would be best as there is no converting required and they can be picked up fairly cheaply with the bonus you can also use it for regular DVD's.

Not to mention the fact that the conversion from divx to vob takes hours. So the convenience alone is worth it.

I'd add to the voices saying it's worth buying a player that will play them natively. The conversion process is a pain in the hole and the loss in quality (unless you convert to dvd) will be substantial.

I use ULTRA DVD Creator V1.6.6
It's absolutely simple to use & the results are excellent.
I always used Nero until I stumbled on this in the torrents.

Sure, conversions are time consuming (Start a run before you go to bed & it will be done over night or while you're gone to work) but, if you want it on DVD & maybe you want to give it to others to watch who don't even know what a Divx player is, then Ultra DVD Converter is a good choice.

It's by a company called AONE but it is available from the torrents.

ConverterXtoDVD by VSO is also available & is a good choice if you need menus. Handy if you want to put three episodes of Lost or whatever onto the one DVD disk.
