    Hi All,

I'm heading to new york in March, while there I was thinkin of buying a digital slr,... probly a Canon 400D or sumthin similar.

I'm presumin it would be cheaper than buying one over here

My friend, who works in a camera shop, nearly slapped me..

He says I'll have no warranty, and their prone to breaking! AAHHH:confused:

Has anybody on here experience with this?

    Cheers

Give him a slap instead. And one for me while your at it. IF something does happen it will be a pain to ass to ship it over and back. But that is a big IF.
I'll be heading there next year to pick up something that will probably cost about $4,000 and I have zero reservations about doing so. I also get all my lenses and flashes from Hong Kong as well.

    Get slapping.

Yeah he is right if something goes wrong you are screwed. On the other hand it will be 40% cheaper than Europe. You pay your money and take your choice.

Not necessarily screwed, a workmate got a bogey Nikon D50 replaced after he bought it in Florida. He had to jump through hoops and he lost some hair but he did get a new replacement.

I’ve decided to pick up a D80 kit for $1100 at B&H when I’ll be over in a few weeks. Did someone on here mention about checking for dead pixels, when buying digital cameras aboard. If so, can anyone link me to a site to see what I should be checking/looking for?

Well you can tell your friend he is full of it ...

If you are paying a lot of cash for your camera then you could consider a three year Mack warranty ... this is usually better than the manufacturers ... and cost less in total to the price of buying in Ireland.

    http://www.mackcam.com/warranty.html

I suppose you already know that the best place to buy in New York is B&H Photo (www.bhphotovideo.com) ... but be warned they are hacidic jews so they close on the sabbath (Saturday) and during festivals ... check their website for information ... the other place I have bought in NY is Abes of Maine out in Brooklyn ...

One bit of advice if you can do it is - If you know and plan to visit anybody in a Neighbouring State (Connecticut or NJ for example) ... then buy the camera gear online and ship it to them well in advance of leaving Ireland ... this will save you an addtional 8.75% ... shipping is cheap ... and sometimes free ...
