I heard a guy say recently that if you regularly wipe a lens with a piece of soft cloth that you will damage the lens. He said that a coating will be removed from the lens making the lens useless!

I am now terrified to rub my lenses and i just use a pen/brush thingy for lightly brushing away dust.

Does anyone know how to clean a lens properly when there are smudges on it or stuff on it other than dust?

First of all buy proper cloth and don't apply too much pressure cleaning the lense.

Lense pen is a good thing for cleaning on the way. Although don't clean little amount of small dust particles, they normally don't affect the picture in any way.

IMHO the proper way of cleaning at home is first brush away dust, then put a little bit of cleaning liquid and wipe it away with the paper cloth (as supplied with the liquid or bought separately). After that let it stay for a while and then brush again or use lense pen.

OFFTOPIC: Somebody told me a story of how motion picture operators used to deal with scratches on lenses in old times: they just took a bit of coal pencil and painted over the scratches ;)
