Cullen announcement on CIE / LUAS Fares
    19 December 2006

Minister for Transport, Martin Cullen TD today (19 December 2006) announced that he has not accepted either the CIE request for increases in fares of up to 10% or the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) request for 3.45%.

Following detailed examination of the application from the CIE companies (Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann) and the RPA (LUAS), the Government decided that an increase of 2.75% in fares revenue for the CIÉ companies and Luas in 2007 was more appropriate. The Minister made the announcement following today's Cabinet meeting.

In reaching the decision, the Minister said he was conscious of the requirement to achieve a balance of the impact on the customers of CIÉ and RPA with the need to sustain the financial health of the companies. In reaching his decision, the Minister said he wanted to encourage and support passengers who are choosing public transport as their commuting option.

It is understood that Iarnród Éireann, Dublin Bus, Bus Éireann and RPA will now finalise the details of the new fares structures.

Dublin Bus`s Increase is the usual 5c.
    95c to €1.00 (Hooray !!)
    €1.35 to €1.40.
    €1.55 to €1.60.
    €1.80 to €1.90.
    €1.90 to €1.90. (Yes NO Increase !!)

    Children
    1 to 7 Stages .65c to 70c
    Above 7 stages.85c to 90c

    School Fare 50c to 55c.

    Shoppers Fare 60c to 65c

    Oddly enough ne`re a mention of the CentreLink Fare....(The Wha,Gay ...????)

Plus the usual arrangement whereby the Old Prepaid Tickets remain valid at the printed rate until new stock comes on stream.

By far and away the best value has to be the Travel90 Value Pack which it seems remains at €16.50 for 10.
This gives unlimited travel for 90 mins after initial validation at a cost of €1.65 per ticket.

I still believe that the T90 concept should be the STANDARD Bus Ticket in Dublin with Cash Fares standardized at €2.00 Adult €1.00 Chizzler.

Ah well...another year ...another missed opportunity !!

Men, it has been well said, think in herds; it will be seen that they go mad in herds, while they only recover their senses slowly, and one by one.
