ESB figures hint at robust housing market
    21 December 2006 19:52

New figures show that electricity connections to new houses in Ireland are five times greater per head of population than connections in Britain.

Experts say it is a strong indication that the housing market in Ireland continues to remain very strong.

This morning ESB Networks connected its 100,000th new customer for 2006. This is the first time in the history of the State that ESB has connected 100,000 customers in a calendar year.

ESB figures show that Ireland is connecting - on a pro rata basis - five times as many new customers as the UK, and that electricity growth in Ireland has consistently outstripped the rest of Europe for the past decade and is continuing to grow.

Earlier this week, an ESRI report showed a need for more electricity generation within two years.

The ESB says this growth has been met by an investment of more than €3.5 billion over the past five years, with a similar investment expected over the next five years.

This morning's 100,000th connection of the year was made at a house in the Wexford town area.

Paul Hickey, regional networks manager with the ESB, says it shows how strongly the housing market is holding up and the predictions are that next year a similar amount of connections, possibly more, will be made.
