Revert back to glass milk bottles?

    How are things?

Just been up to the recycling centre and couldnt help but notice the vast amount of tetra-pack cartons I was throwing away.

Would it not be better for the environment to revert back to the good old-fashioned glass milk bottle that could be re-used an infinite number of times?

Is there some reason why it wouldnt be appropriate anymore? (Safety issues etc...)

    What does anyone think?

I've thought of this before and I would love to see things like this brought back in. Not only milk bottles, but everything that can be reduced should be. The amount of packaging on some items is ridiculous. Take the likes of Easter eggs for example and then small electronic items with packaging that could fit hundreds, if not thousands of the item your actually buying, inside the packaging it comes with:mad:

Maybe better suited to green issues forum though?

Well, there are the little plastic milk cartons that loads of people give out about. Allegedly, they allow the light in, which may change the taste of your milk if left out for a period of time. So glass bottles sitting on your front doorstep on a hot summer's morning is going to taste rank, right?

I'm not entirely sure why they changed in the first place. Probably easier to stack/store cartons.

Tetra-pak can be recycled too. If you have a green bin then it can be put in this.

I only wish my green bin would take plastic too.

[edit]More info on what the green bin takes http://www.dublinwaste.ie/green_bin.html[/edit]

You also have to bear in mind 2 things:

    1) Birds breaking the seal of bottles, so something sturdier would have to be thought up

    and

    2) Jerks going around throwing the bottles that milkmen leave at peoples doors. Glass is more appealing than the tetrapacks

Afaik, milk loses some of its nutritional value when left exposed to sunlight for ages.

the bottles wouldn't have to be clear glass. Think this is in the wrong forum though.
