    Hey all,

    So i've been in this job six months now and I have grown to despise it so much that I am even thinking of giving up and changing my chosen career path.

    Any ways I was just wonderng what the protocal with leaving employment is, I know I should write a letter but in it should I be nice and thank my employer for the post and sugar coat or should i state in it my reasons for leaving and how miserable I am in this job my main reasons include discrepencies over pay and commission and lack of support from employer along with attitude of employer. I was employed in the markeing area but ended up running the whole show on my own.

    I never signed my contract even though my employer constanlty refers to it so do I give my 2 weeks as stated or what?

    Also I really need a reference so i suppose leaving on good terms is the way to go but how do i request a reference.

    ANy help would be great guys im completely in the dark when it comes to leaving employment

    Regest a private chat with your boss and tell him/her you want to leave and then send them an email saying 'i quit because...' to get it down on paper..

    I once lied about my reasons for leaving a job actually. I friggin hated the place and was desperate to leave. So I thought that up so they would not mess me around and enforce notice period or try to keep me etc etc. I invented both a invent a sick family member and a struggling family business [of sick person]. You can therefore leave on good terms and take a nice refrence off them..

    As you said, be nice and formal about it, as you will need a refrence from them if you wanted to stay in that area of business.

    something like - you enjoyed time with the firm but recently you have been having second thoughts about the line of work you are in.
    you now feel (after a discussion with some close friends) that it could be time for change instead of getting stuck in the same line of work forever.

    there is nothing worse than being stuck in a job you hate

    *if they ever come across you in another similar job just tell them that you found getting a different type of job next to impossible and had to go back to what to you knew*

    When I left my last job, I simply requested a meeting to tell my boss face to face and handed him a brief letter stating I was giving three weeks notice.

    I didn't go into how bitter, angry, frustrated, shafted and belittled I felt, I just stated what date I would be leaving and told the boss that it was a "privilege" to work with him.

    I wouldn't go into the resons why you are leaving, especially if you badly need a reference from them. Phrases such as "time to move on", "realising my potential" and other such fluff can deflect such questions.

    My advice would be for you to tell your boss you want to leave to go travelling or something, make it up if you have to. Be nice, be polite and ask him would he arrange for a written reference for you with HR.

    You have only been there 6 months, its not your responsibility to "fix" the companies problems for everyone else by telling you mgr what you think of him and his company. Besides if you have a notice period to work, then you will have to sit there in the office for the next few weeks after telling your boss he's crap and you hate working for him. Chances are that HR will not take your complaints seriously as you have only been there for a few months, and your boss has probably been there for years. Anyway I dont think 6 months is enough to know a company (they could be going through a particularly bad patch or a period of transition) especially if you are junior and this is one of your first jobs, for all you know this is par for the course in your field and its the same everywhere.

    As for not having a contract I dont know if that means you can just leave without giving notice. Since you received the contract and then turned up to work is that as good as you signing it? Maybe some of the legal eagles on the boards can help with this.

    i agree with the posts here.

    You do not have to give any reasons for leaving but put it in writing and to be honest if I had an employee for 6 months I would not give a written refernce as I do not know them well enough but I would offer a phone refernce based on timekeeping, appearance and stuff like that so honestly dont hold your breath. This is no reflection on you by the way.

    However you are by law required to give one weeks notice to your employer unless otherwise stated in contract which you have signed, i see you havent so one week should be fine unless they ask you to stay on until a certain project is finished.
