unless the 5th card is an ace, AK wins.

For all hands, work out what is the best 5 card hand you can make. In this case you have 9999A vs 9999J, and the one with the ace is a higher hand.

Its a good exercise while you play to work out what the best hand could be for each flop, turn and river during a game in your head. After a while you'll know what the 'nuts' is instantly.
