What did I do wrong?

Ok, before I begin, I admit I am a bit new to Holdem and don't claim to be an expet, but want to learn, so go easy on me ;)

I was playing on-line, 6 seat single tournment.

First hand I get delt A J off suit, I call out of position, nobody raised (five callers I think)...

    Flop J 8 3 (rainbow)
Checked to me so I bet half pot, wanting to push them off it with a bit of luck...I got two callers,

Turn card is a 5 so I bet half pot again, glad there are no kings or queens out there, I still figure I had the best hand....I get one caller.

River is Ace, so I have top two pair, no flushes on the board, I am putting the other guy on maybe J Q or J K, so I check it thinking if he has an ace he will bet and even if he doesn't he will try it on... he bets about half his remaining stack... I go all in. The guy went mad..saying I was a pure amatuer check-raising the river....he didn't call me though, so I thought it was a good move, if I bet the river he might have folded, this way he threw in half his remaining stack, and nearly called me, I am fairly sure if he had three of a kind he would have raised me earlier...I dunno, what is so bad about the play? specifically check-raising the river?

    Cheers

It's fine, you checked the river and induced a bluff, just calling prob would have been a better tho.

You played it well, the river check is strange but good.

absolutelhy nothing, don't worry about what they think of your play. Just the results are all that counts. Live and die by them.

i think limping here is pretty bad,i'd raise preflop

Looks like the guy was pissed that he fell for your trap and bluffed off half his stack. There are a lot of people out there who think they know the game inside out - those who actually do soon learn its best to keep it to your self when in a competitive game.

another thing i have noticed is if you do something out of the ordinary i.e. check-raise the river you will be given out for it. people dont like you playing differently to them. if everyone played the same the only winner would be the house.
i also like the c-r river.

Nothing wrong with check raising a river.
