Anyone use their Wii to play AVI files?

I'm still waiting for my SD card to be delivered so haven't tested it yet but curious to know how well the Wii play videos - AVI and Mov I believe. Does it handle DivX etc?

    Let me know your experience?

    Cheers.

The only format is plays atm is Motion JPEG.

Used this and it worked fine. Have only tried with small files though, no high quality ones.

I presume it is only intended for small files from SD cards as Nintendo probably designed it for video from digital cameras and the like.

Anyway there shouldn't be any real problems with large files either other than buying an SD card large enough to store them. It only keeps a certain amount of any video buffered at any one time.

No you can get 4gb ones, but the wii only supports them upto 2gb so it's pointless getting a bigger one.

Surely there must be a way of converting divx .avi files to work, and work at decent quality no?

Link I gave above works, but as I said I'm not sure how good the quality was. It turned my 600kb .3gp file into a 6mb mjpeg file so it bumps up the file size quite a bit. Hopefully Ninty will release support for other formats in the future.

3gp is highly compressed so its no surprise the file turned out bigger , a divx file it would probably be ok
EDIT just converted an episode of the simpsons and it went from around 75 mb to 509mb!

Think it depends on the length, irregardless of quality. 180mb American Dad went to 510mb. It's certainly watchable, but I imagine there'll be a few updates to allow other formats to run, possibly coinciding with the web player being launched (e.g. wmv's/avi's online).
