Just thought id check to see what mpg people get on their motors.

    My mazda 323f 96 does about 110miles for 20euro (1 litre = 1.02euro)

This would be fairly slow driving, havent got a heavy foot at all. A lot of the time it would be sitting traffic on the way home and it would be short/medium journeys.

Its my first car and i think thats a bit steap, but it is a 1.5 so im not to shocked.

    How about yorselves?

Fill the tank! 20 euro means nothing :D
Fill it, find out what the capacity is, reset your trip counter and when you need to fill up again take note of the mileage.

My 1.6 Primera gets on average 450 miles to a tank.. a tank being about the €50 mark depending on the price of fuel.

Are you changing gear at the right time? When you move off in heavy traffic do you just leave it in first till the traffic stops again? This is detremental to mpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,949 ✭✭✭SouperComputer

Lower speeds are generally less economical. Especially if you are starting and stopping in traffic. Often in traffic the engine will be running but the car is not moving. The law of physics that it takes more energy to start a body moving than to keep it moving (paraphrasing here) applies here also. This is why city\traffic driving is results in poor economy.

Depending on the aerodynamic efficiency of the car, round 50-55MPH is a sweet spot for for economy, somtimes more.

A bigger engine be harder in traffic on fuel because it uses more to idle (generally), however on a motorway or main road, there is not a great deal of difference as you only need so much HP to overcome the aero resistance to get to 100KPH. Naturally giving the bigger car a bootfull of throttle while overtaking makes things get a bit less economical :)

    Tips for better fuel economy:

Use the brakes and power as little as needed, safety is paramount of course.

Leave plenty of room from the car in front, this gives you more time to compensate and anticipate what is going on. Too close means you have to brake and then acellerate often, thereby using more fuel.

Keep engine revs low, but do not labour the engine by forcing it to struggle (Ie loading it) at low revs.

I record my mileage every time I fill that tank. I never to partial fills. It's a VW Golf 1.4litre.
My average is 38.9mpg, with a max of 47.7 and low of 30.8.

    SouperComputer: Good tips.

    I drive a 1.5crdi Cerato and get 1000km per €50 diesel. :D

Thanks for the tips, 110miles for 20 euro seems a bit crap in comparison to what everyone else gets. Im sure cos its an older car this is a reason. Il lash it in for a service after xmas and get the filters done etc.

When im in the traffic i usually just drive on the clutch, just keeping the car rolling so i dont have to stop and start. But i have been guilty of over reving low gears so will keep an eye on that.

I went to check my tire pressure today and it was 35psi, i couldnt find the exact psi written on the tyres anywhere, so left them alone. Is this about right?

Also i know things like air-con etc decrease mpg, but to what extent? I never have the air con on, but would have the heater on full blast, the cd player and most of the time when im driving my lights would be on. Would this be significant?

7th Generation Celica, 1.8vvti, €50 approx to fill, between 350 and 400 miles. Will be less than 350 if a lot of city driving or hot weather with air con.

30mpg average in a 1.8 Alfa 156..most driving is 40mph with very little traffic on a daily basis.

I get 250 or so miles from a tank (€55) in a Mercedes C280 auto, driven fairly hard. Feel better now?:)

I drive mostly under 30mph in stop go traffic. 1.0 Corsa 300-350 miles in winter for a full tank of €45, it'll do over 400 in summer when heater and demister aren't needed and up to 500 long distance

We only did this one a few months back! :)

Was getting 30.5 now getting about 29 since the weather went colder and the ventalation system started earning its keep.

55mpg in my Peugeot 306 2.0 HDi. Reckon I could stretch it if I made the effort to drive a little more 'conservatively'.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,669 ✭✭✭mukki

    I get from 55-65 mpg from a 1.6HDi (110bhp) peugeot 307....

and i have never turned the aircon off! (well i have but it turns itself back on next time i start the car, so gave up on it)

    edit- do'h bet too it

If you can, leave a bigger gap so that you can engage the clutch fully and have the engine on idle drive the car. Better for your clutch, especially the release bearing. In really slow traffic, you might even be able to get into 3rd gear without using the throttle. However you dont want to use throttle at such low revs as then you will be labouring the engine. Basically you can use this when you dont anticpate accellerating for a while.

As an experiment, in a safe environment, drive the car without any throttle, go through the gears by letting the clutch in gently and you will be surprised how fast it will go if you give it time.

98 BMW 318is - €60 to fill tank, min to over max, and can get just over 400 miles from a tank - this works out at around 35mpg

00 Civic 1.4 - €40 to fill tank, min to over max, got 340 miles doing same journeys as beemer. I worked it out at the time to be about 45mpg

The little economy gauge on the beemer is a nice idea - 60mpg in 5th@60mph, but goes off the scale when taking off! Taught me how to drive more economically - the more you push the throttle pedal, the lower your mpg goes, regardless of vehicle speed or selected gear.

Fill my A4 1.9 tdi €55-€60.Get between 650-700 miles out of a tank. Its mainly long distance driving

Clutch will be fine in most cars as the revs dont change much (usualy less than 500 RPM), when you change the gear, ie the clutch does not slip much therefor little wear.

Worry not about being behind me (aside from me being in the US right now!), like I said, I would do this when very little acelleration is needed. Rather than ringing in 1st, pop it into 2nd and let the momentum of the car drive it and third if needed. Wont work with all cars though it depends on how the engine and more importantly the gearbox\final drive setup.

    '92 bmw 325- 27 mpg.
i think it should do a little better because i suspect it needs a new MAF sensor. it's already had a new lambda sensor. it'll take a lot of miles to compensate me at the approx 3 missing mpg to justify the €350 price tag.

735-21mpg. has anyone noticed how proportionately economical huge engines are? i bet there's no discernable difference in the 745.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

Getting about 27 MPG in my 1.3 Fiesta (crappy pushrod, etc. :D), but a lot of that's in shítty non-moving traffic (including about 400m of a hill that takes over 20 minutes to travel up in the mornings!), and I rarely get the chance to drive on a road with a limit higher than 60km/h. And I've been driving about 2 months so I'm probably not exactly efficient yet either...

Im getting 29/30mpg from a 1.0l Polo, not good I know but its traffic driving, not many long trips.
I still dont know why its burning through fuel for fun though, a 1.0l just shouldnt burn that much.

    gary,

fill your car to the top
    reset your trip meter
drive until the red light comes on
fill it up to the top and note the litres
    note the mileage

divide your litres by 4.54 to get gallons
divide your miles by gallons to get mpg

    miles per euro?
    euro per tank?

I've got a new one fer ye :D

My yoke gives around 8.3 litres per 100 kilometres
(not great for a 1.3 ...but it's only short hops every time. On long runs I get under 7 litres)

Now convert that one into miles per euro :D:D:D

Ah thats it! I think you may have solved my problem! The temp gauge on my motor is fecked (it doesnt work at all). Would this mean the temperature thing is broken and hence would be a factor in my ****ty MPG?

How much we looking at to have it fixed?

it's telling the car the engine is cold, and delivering more fuel to warm it up!
