Humming/Muisic

    Hi all,

Not sure if this should be in an exsisting thread so if it needs to be moved feel free please. Anyway lately I keep hearing humming (as in someone humming a tune) around me. It mostly happens when I am meditating, I thought first this was due maybe to the TV down stairs but its not, and today driving back from the school run, I felt a presence in the car and again the humming. I dont know what the tune is but its almost like what a mother may hum to a child while rocking them to sleep.

Anyone ever had this happen to them?

Wow, that sounds lovely. How does it make you feel?
I've been having much more auditory presences lately too.

    Hi Kshiel.

I get a humming but not music. It's more of a deep rumbling hum that I hear just in one ear and mostly at night (ie when all else is quiet) though it also started really strongly one day when i was sitting talking to a work colleague (quite distracting!). I thought it was just a form of tinnitus but I believe tinnitus is more of a high pitched sound. Then I came across info on the Taos Hum, an interesting phenomenon which I don't have time to go into just now but it is worth googling!

I went through a phase of about a month where I was hearing this every night and it was keeping me awake and driving me mad! It stopped for quite a while but has started again in the past week or so though it isn't as strong as before.

I've no idea if it is anything paranormal or not! I've love to hear others' views though.

If I get a chance later I'll find a link to info on the Taos Hum.

Tinnitus doesn't always have to be high pitched. The high pitched one is usually a symptom of damage to the ear drums, but infections can create other sounds.

I was driven nuts each night for about a month with it... it sounded like someone had left a car engine idling outside the house all night... It wasn't until I finally got up one night and went to see whose car it was that I realised that it was all inside my head.

I try and google that later on today littlebug, thanks. I found it quite distracting on some occasions too.

Aishling, it gives a very pleasant feeling, almost lulling, mothering sense to it. Although today coming back from the school I did hear a noise in the back seat (a empty tayto bag been moved or crunched) when I felt the presence also, so it kinda reinforced the feeling of the presence been more phycially there, and I must say I have felt them coming much closer to my person of late.

Its not a vibration sound like an engine running, or next door radio coming through, its much closer yet it seems to come from say a corner of the room and then above and around me, its not very loud but it is someone humming a tune. But I wont rule out other explainations just yet as it has only been going on a week or two now.

That's funny I did exactly the same except to me it sounded like a diesel truck engine idling. Night after night I was looking out the window to see where it was! Did you actually find out that you did have an infection? I would have thought that you'd have other symtoms e.g pain or high temp with infection. You should look have a look at some of the Taos Hum stuff though if you haven't already. That "idling engine" sound is common.

Warning to anyone who decides to google Taos Hum... don't look at the site that says it is the Official Taos Hum site, it's not! Definitely don't look at it at work!

    Here's a safe one.

Kshiel.. Sorry this has hijacked your thread a bit. What you are hearing sounds very different and sounds much more pleasant!

Funnilly enough I heard a very loud and clear squeaking in my car (back seat towards the left) and went through every possibility, ie moving shaking etc all the items.......maybe we have gremlins in our car? :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 994 ✭✭✭kshiel

Your not hijacking the thread littlebug, all information valuable in my eyes and a normal explanation cannot be ruled out either. Thanks for the link by the way will get to read it later on and give it proper attention.

Gremlins, hee, wished they would clean the car so. I have heard the squeaking in the car as well towards the door, directly behind me. I am going to find some quite time this evening and try and meditate, if the humming starts I will try and listen closer, to see if I can either determine what it is been hummed and other possibilities to what could make the same noise.

I sort of have had a sort of humming-ringing sound in my ear, I compared it to what those old TV test things used to sound like, only not as loud and a bit more ringy... mostly happens when it's silent, never really thought about it that much till just now, although I was thinking I had tinnitus, not so sure now...

Edit: I don't even know what a diesel engine humming sounds like... that said, I only read the first few lines of it so maybe there's something I'm missing.

I've had something sort of similar, I get a really high pitched sound in my ear now and again, not sure what that is.
I also hear songs playing in the distance, its like I have to really tune in to them to hear them, one was The Verve playing over and over again, a couple of days later I was with my son waiting for an appointment and the song came on the radio, odd really.

I've experienced this aswell but mostly with the music. Many times I've been awake and heard music in the distance. It wasn't anything on in the house and has happened in my girlfriend's house too (which is detached) so it couldn't have been the neighbours' music. I have to really "tune in" to get it aswell and sometimes I pick up on conversations but I can't tell who or what they are about. It's really weird and hard for me to explain but it's a great relief to hear that others are experiencing the same thing. I thought I was going mad a few years back!

Tried meditating last night, didn't hear the humming at the begining this time. I was getting beautiful images of a group of young girls playing a game (you know the one where they are all intertwing around a pole with ribbions) and it was during this image the humming started. I still cannot make out what is been hummed but the word sparrow and little ladybug seemed to be tied in somewhere. Quite strange but quite beautiful at the same time. I have to admit I am getting excited about this, of course it all could still be something in my sub-consious (never can spell that word).

That sounds lovely Kshiel though I think the little ladybug is probably just a strange hybrid of me and ladybird :p Strange but beautiful eh... the strange bit probably comes from me:D

Interesting that others (Dib) have heard music too. This has actually reminded me that one night a couple of weeks ago when I stopped the car and turned off the radio I could still hear music (but not the music that was on the radio before I turned it off). I took the radio front off completely but I could still hear it. I opened the car door but it was a wild wet blustery night so I wasn't hearing it from outside. Like your examples I just couldn't make out what exactly it was. I assumed that it was just a fault with the radio though and it hasn't happened since.

Ive often heard music or mumbled conversations at night when the house is quiet. Ive been known to wake my husband and drive him mad going, listen! can you hear that! Its always low and far away like from a neighbours or outside (but we dont have close neighbours) or like a radio playing in the next room. I also had this in my teens, when schizophrenia was mentioned  but I honestly dont think im hearing voices in that way.

I have tinnitus, but this is nothing like it.

Its great to hear of other people experiencing the same thing, half the time my hubby looks at me like I'm mad when I'm asking if he can hear the same things.
My mother even heard conversations the other night, she got out of bed to see if there were people outside her house but there was nothing, she couldn't make out any of the words though.

I find there's always a high pitch sound in quiet environments. The same kinda sound of the tv on mute.
I read about a certain meditation you can do in which you concentrate on this sound. It'll eventually turn into music and you can have some fun at this stage, but that's as far as I got with that.
Or I find concentrating on indestinguishable sounds I just end up making it into something different, like music/words/running water/whatever.
    I think it's just a wandering relaxed mind...for now.

I was thinking last night of what other things could make this humming noise, and I remembered all the toys the kids have that play soft muisic, none of them seem to sound like what I heard and I dont think it was them but it is a possibility.

I like the idea of a wandering mind 18AD as that can create so many possibilites in this with sound and images mixing nicely together.

Yeah, it works for images too. It was a technique of Salvador Dali to see things in a different light. I dunno why, but it's almost always a face when I'm looking at stuff. It's fun to do when you're bored also. :p

This is exactly how it works for me. I can hear a conversation but I can rarely hear any of the words!! I honestly, for the life of me couldn't think of any other way to explain it than that, and that sounds completely crazy which is why I never even tried to talk to anyone about this!! As I said. Really great to hear others have experienced this too. :D

My mum was saying that she could make out the people she heard had a Connemara accent (where she is from), she was so convinced that it was people outside she went and had a look, but there was no one there.

It's funny, and I dunno if this applies at all, but I used to hear someone calling my name sometimes, and whenever I went downstairs, I found out no one was calling me...

That happened me once when I was staying in Clontarf Castle at a wedding. Went to bed and thought I heard some one whisper my name, I was in the room by myself as hubby was still kicking it up with the relatives, but must say had had a lot of drink that day and could have been me saying it, but for about 3 seconds it did catch me off gaurd. There is a graveyard just beside it, unusual little place, we went for a walk around it after our dinner, quiet small for a burial grounds.

Same happend with the whispering. About a year ago me and my brother were alone in the house at around midnight. Each of us on diffrent sides of the house. I heard my mom calling me and went to her room to also find my brother coming out his room also heading there. This is when we realized that my parents were out and that it could not have been her. But was odd that me and my brother heard it

It's happened to me multiple times... most notably at two houses I lived at. One was about 3-4 years ago, the other was about 12-13 years ago.
