Well I just downloaded Mario 64. I never played it before so I'm looking forward to getting stuck into it. From the other games that I saw that were available I would say for a puzzle game grab Solomons Key for NES. Great game and very tough. Donkey Kong Country is a must have from the SNES and I've heard an awful lot of talk about Gunstar Heroes on Megadrive. Other ones definitely worth a look would be Bomberman for up to 5 player madness and of course the great Sonic. I'll be waiting on Sonic 2 myself though.

The best there would definitely be Gunstar Heroes. Best game on the Megadrive and it's always a blast to play especially in 2 player. It might be short but you will play it again and the bosses get extra attacks with each difficulty level increase so you haven't really beaten it until you beat hard (expert mode is just an extremely tough hard mode, good luck with that). Mario 64 is an all time classic as is Donkey Kong Country. Bomberman is excellent. Can't wait for R-type, the TG-16 conversion is one of the best.

Most of the above mentioned I have and its nice to have games that don't glitch like certain roms

yeah likewise but nintendo do like to tease

I presume they save the N64 releases as 'big' releases for the VC. It'd be bad business strategy if they just splurged out every game that will be available at the same time.

By teasing us a bit with N64 releases it means we will be more tempted to buy each game as it is released.

truue but even the odd average game would be nice

Im currently enjoying Gunstar Heros and Donkey Kong Country and Sonic I'm getting the kids into Mario 64 I don't think it is a game that should be missed

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭djkeogh

Nope never played it until i downloaded it. Even bought an N64 about 6 months ago and never got my hands on a copy of it. Ah well I will get to enjoy it all the more now! I am looking forward to some more N64 games. Bring on Killer Instinct!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Only bought Golden Axe so far. I'd like to see them add some more N64 games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Bring on Conkers Bad Fur day!!!!
And who thinks they will/should start releasing the old GameBoy and GameBoy Colour games on the VC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭djkeogh

Golden Axe is great. I played it to death on Rom's though so doubt I'll pick it up. Could be good to see some of the old Gameboy games resurface, maybe in time! I'm holding out now til Friday when Toejam and Earl hits the VC. have to get a friend over for that. I loved that game back in the day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,304 ✭✭✭✭koneko

Yeah, pretty much just got Golden Axe for nostalgic reasons. I had a serious addiction to that game, I don't even want to think about how many times I completed it. Played it a bit yesterday and gives me that warm fuzzy feeling :)

it is pure nostalgia there is no doubt. I'd pick it up if some the lads came over and wanted to play it which is pretty likely in fairness. It's too easy and tempting to just spend a whole lot of money on all these games!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,407 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

It's far too convenient to buy the VC games. I finally got hold of another original copy of Gunstar Heroes recently after mine was stolen many moons ago and am still going to buy it on the VC despite it being perfect on emulators and the fact that it's in crappy 50Hz PAL slow motion on the VC.

Really would like to see Streets of Rage series, Rocket Knight Adventures, Lylat Wars, Fire Emblem series and Sin and Punishment (come on Nintendo, you translated Sin and Punishment for the Chinese iQue why can't you be nice and translate it and Fire Emblem for your neglected European fans).

    I've spent €70 on Wii points already:p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

I bought my second 2000 point Wii Points card last night (that's €50 for both!!!)
So far I've bought Donkey Kong Country(800), Bomberman(600) and last night I bought Gunstar Heroes (800). :D Think the next one will be Super Castlevania IV :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,521 ✭✭✭Shred

I've only bought Mario Bros and there's nothing else I'd be tempted into buying so far. I'd love to see some more N64 games come out though (even though I still have my N64 and games!) and I'm really looking forward to Super Mario World too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

The way I see it is, I already have every game in the VC list so far as well as all my other favourites. The only time I will get any VC games is when I get them via stars.AKA for free:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭djkeogh

Yea I picked up 3000 points through the shop channel and am holding off now for some more releases. A few of the Castlevania games will be a must for me. Dying for some more of the N64 titles to come out as well. The excitement of waiting to see what treasures can be unearthed each Friday will hopefully keep me going for quite awhile

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 258 ✭✭donkey 2002

I can now start to delete my emulators with their faults and glitches but I do agree we need at least two more titles on N64 before the end of January

Only way is to bring your Wii to someone elses house who has broadband and WiFi.

    Otherwise, no.

I read somewhere that you can use dial up internet if you get a LAN adapter.

    Is this wrong?

    **** it!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,123 ✭✭✭✭Star Lord

Yeah it's wrong, as dial-up uses a standard telephone cable as opposed to an ethernet cable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Another way of getting VC games without your own connection would be to buy and SD memory card for the Wii and bring it to a friends house if they have Wii and pay him/her and download it on their Wii and move it to your memory card and bring it home with you.

Although that only being useful if your friend has a Wii, other than that yeah just bring the console to somewhere that does have a broadband connection.

Afaik this isn't possible. Games are locked to a console.

    To answer the orginal question;
Donkey Kong Country is easily the fave of my purchases so far (Mario64, Ristar, Gunstar Heroes, Golden Axe, Bomberman, Columns...)
For a game to tear me away from my limited window of Zelda playtime, it'd have to be pretty damn special, and this game is just that:)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Nope, have done this myself. You can only move them to the SD card. You can not copy them.

Oh and just noticed that Ristar is up on there now.
For anyone who has/or hasn't played this I suggest giving the few points for it.
    Absolutely great game.

You can certainly copy/move VC games to an SD card. But can you actually then copy to another console and play them?
I think that is what Jimeatsmenu meant when he said they are locked to a machine - you can move them off the machine but they will only play on the console they were downloaded on.
Otherwise we would be all getting games for free from a single download.

What Ace is saying is that you can move the games to an SD card and play them on another console but once they're on the SD they're gone off that console until you move them back. I still thought this wasn't possible, but if Ace has done it himself can't really argue with that.

Ah now i think I understand what he meant. In that there is a difference between coping and moving a VC game to SD card? Never even noticed if there was a move option. I thought it was just Erase or Copy.
So he's saying that if you move a game to SD you can no longer play it on your own console? And if you then copy it to another Wii then it will play on that one?
I must try that with my Wii and a mate's.
So technically if you bought a Wii console and downloaded VC games to SD, you could duplicate those VC games onto tons of SD cards and lots of ppl could play them for free? But just the original Wii couldn't?
Surprised if Nintendo would allow such a scenario.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_Console_(Wii) need to correct their info too. ;)

No there is no way around having to pay for each copy of the game.
Anytime you select copy to move the game from one device to another, it moves it completely. If it's from the Wii to the card, it's no longer on the Wii.It's just on the card.

And Vice Versa. So if you have any VC game on your card you can only move it to any one console at once because when you copy it to one it gets removed completely from the SD card and moved to the console.

That's what I have done and it works.
No way of cheating the system though unfortunately.

What about a card reader on PC? Does the file show up? What does the file look like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

No idea. Will try it when I get around to it.
If anyone else feels like doing it go ahead.
I would seriously doubt copying it through your PC would be possible.
    But we live in hope.:D

You must have some strange Wii console there Ace! I can copy VC games to SD and they still appear and play no problem on the Wii. I have all my VC games backed up to SD and to PC.
So you can definitely play a VC game (downloaded on your machine) on another person's Wii that hasn't downloaded the same game before? How does the other wii pay for the game you copy back from the card?

Agreed on Ristar though, tis a great game.

TmB: Yes, they do copy to PC from the SD using a card reader. The Wii creates a "private\Wii" folder on the card and each game gets copied into a subfolder of that. The folder names aren't related to the game name though, most of the 16bit games have file sizes around 3 or 4mb although one of them is 11mb - i'm guessing that's Mario 64.

It seems Nintendo are giving us some extra games for christmas/new year
    check this link :http://www.gamespot.com/news/6163549.html?tag=latestnews;title;1

Does anyone know what new games are being released next year for the VC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Also does anyone know if all the N64 Rare titles will be released?
AKA Conker's Bad Fur Day, Jet Force Gemini and the likes.
As far as the articles I have read go, Nintendo were not all that proud of Conker's Bad Fur Day.So I'm worried they won't release it on the VC.:(

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,339 ✭✭✭✭tman

Rare seem to be Microsoft's bitches now (good riddance if PD0 is anything to go by!), so I doubt we'll see any of their N64 games...
But then again we got DKC...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

aye but i'd imagine we got donkey kong as it's a licenced nintendo character.

the other characters in RARE games aren't afaik

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 978 ✭✭✭AceCard Jones

Yeah but if it's released "as it was" there shouldn't really be any legal problems should there?I mean it's still just a game they already have on one of their consoles.I mean they could still sell the original game on the N64 if they wanted couldn't they?I don't know, here is to hoping I guess.:)
