Like a bunch of idiots our band have lost two adaptors for american pedals in the last month or so, i left mine at a gig in waterford the other night. more to the point we are recording tomorrow and cant record the vocals without one of the said pedals. If any of you know where i can get a european adaptor that would work with an american pedal, or would be good enough to loan me one for a couple of days i would appreciate it immensely. i would give you a deposit or some kind of guarantee that we could discuss and im based in dublin.

    cheers,

    Kevin

Radionics on Herberton road in Dublin might be able to help you out. Bring the pedal or any info that might help them get a match for you. Good luck

Pedals run on low voltage and usually DC, so there's no difference between American pedals and European pedals, the difference is in the power supply. Any european psu that has the correct output voltage and sufficient current will work. If you can find out the voltage (usually 9V or 12V DC, but occasionally AC), the current (anywhere from 20mA to 1000mA), and the polarity (usually a symbol beside the plug indicating whether the tip is positive or ground) then you can go to Maplin on Jervis street or out to Radionics and either should be able to sort you out on pretty short order.

Voltage has to be more or less exact, AC/DC likewise, polarity is usually switchable, and current just needs to be anything higher than your pedal requires. Regulated supplies will generally give lower noise.

sorry for digging up this issue again lads but the mission continues, radionics had nothing, none of the shops in the city centre could help. There is a European Whammy adaptor on thomann for a tenner, 220v in, 1300mA 9 V AC out. Wiil the European adaptor power the american pedal? if it does ill order about five of the feckers..

    Yes it will.

It will power a digitech whammy, but not very many other pedals. Most pedals run on DC not AC. They're not intercompatible.

Most US pedals are AC. However, what you're looking for is in Maplin's catalogue so you could try their shop.

Eh, most power adapters convert to DC. All mains electricity is AC.

    Nope. My POD is 9vAC.

I'm getting really confused by this stuff now. Are their any electricians who can come on and clear this up for us. Do you have to use a step down voltage converter with US pedals or will any generic euro ac/dc adaptor do?

Most pedals can be powered by a battery and they need 9V DC current, the same power the battery supplies. Ones which need to draw their power solely from the mains, such as your pod or the aforementioned Whammy are often AC.

Edit -> 9V DC batteries are the same over the world, so although US and EU power supplies might be different, what is supplied to the pedal is the same, 9V DC.

This stuff has been cleared up plenty of times in recent threads.

The POD you buy in america is EXACTLY the same as the one you buy here. The only difference is the adaptor - as US pod adaptor is designed to convert 110V to 9vAC whereas a EURO pod adaptor converts 220V to 9vAC.

That goes for almost all pedals and plenty of light consumer goods as well (gameboys etc).

As has been pointed out already, pods and whammys and plenty of similar bigger units require AC rather than DC.
