Bankroll part 1, mission semi-accomplished

Back in March I decided I was quitting poker and took a 6 week long holiday mid-July this Summer after spending a year grinding it out at .50/1 with a 10 buyin BR which I lost at the end of that month.

I had very little money when I got back from the holiday and I'd been messing around again since early September, making small deposits -- withdrawing winnings and just recently accomplished stage one of my grand mission to finally build a decent bankroll for NL cash play online. Here's how the ball finally got rolling for me: On the 21st of November I made a $300 deposit to pokerhost.

It entitled me to a $300 sign up bonus (which is not yet cleared -- 20K AP's to clear before month end) + entry into their 100K freeroll. I won $250 in their freeroll placing 72nd out of 999 runners and some money on the cash tables (starting out at .05/.10c) with a $10 buyin and quickly moved to .10/.20c the day after the freeroll win with circa 27 buyins of $20. I then put 4 buyins of $50 aside for .25/.50c NL when I reached $705 on the 31st of November.

I ran good and on the 8th of November when I hit $1400, I decided to take those same 4 buyins to allow myself to move up the stakes to .50/1 and drop back down to .25/.50c if I hit $1K and rinse and repeat until I got things moving forward to where I wanted them. The big goal of all of this is to be sufficiently bankrolled to play 1/2 NL -- $4K is my mission presently accomplished but it will go on afterwards. The next part of this mission/goal will be reaching $2.8K since I am adequately bankrolled for .50/1 now and sticking to the 4 buyin rule to allow myself to move up the stakes until I hit a 20 buyin BR and feel very comfortable with the level I am playing at.

so far, so good, so what? 1/2 NL here I come! I'm a very happy bunny and pray the poker gods may continue this huge run of good fortune I have had but if not I'll be back to tell you all about it soon enough with another big rambling post. I hit $2116 as of the night before last, good luck at the tables folks.

Thanks to the posters that finally gave me the nudge I needed to do this in a faster manner. My biggest problem or weakness last year and at the beginning of this year was not putting anything aside to allow myself to move up the stakes. I only very recently became very comfortable playing 4 tables at a time which has helped immensely.

a really impressive achievement chief, congrats

but remember to enjoy ur winnings too! don't invest too much emotional energy in just playing because 2 grand can be eaten pretty quick with two bad beats at 1-2 nl.

u are doing brilliantly, I'm just saying be careful of pushing yourself to make a big profit too quickly. If you don't give yourself some rewards and ensure that you are emotionally removed a little you could burn out and your bankroll will suffer.

I know I'm the harbinger of Doom but you have all the time in the world!

    congrats again, d.

some wise words of wisdom from Doc.... if you get fixated on wanting to play 1/2 (btw you need 4k min. to play) this is going to affect your play when you see your roll take a dip.

Play on at 50/1 until you have a sufficient roll to hit 1/2.

Thanks Doc, those are some wise words indeed. Not to worry though, I've burnt through severe chunks of my roll in the past which you are probably aware of due to my postings. I've become a lot more disciplined with myself lately and am not letting the fact that I'm winning and growing my bankroll allow me to get overly confident or cocky. I have been treating myself with money I have outside of my roll too.

Given where I'm at, I know the smarter way to approach this would be to wait until I have $4K on my account and put 5 buyins aside for 1/2 NL since there's plenty to be made at .50/1. I Will have to wait and see how well I run, part of the reason I posted my progress was to get some feedback on what the best way to go about moving up the stakes will be and taking a few buyins seems to be the best way to go about it so long as I drop back down when it doesn't work out.

Congrats on your good run TacT, how long have you been playing? And where are you playing? Is that a tribeca skin you talked about? 6Max or 9Max?

cheers peeko. 2 years online now -- 9 seater but I'm learning how to play short handed cash at the moment at another site on the .10/.20c tables. www.pokerhost.com but don't go signing up for any bonuses because they will be null and void by the end of this month!

First, congrats on your winnings, I also recomend you to enjoy your winnings don't rush on bigger tables if you feel you might lose your money, or do it but don't spend all your money.

Regarding your bonus, I also have an account with Poker Host and as far as I know the bonus is good until April 30th, so I think that if you have not clear it yet you still have time to do it. You can check with them because I think you still have chance to get that money.

you should really wait till you have 4k at least before moving up to 1/2

if you're good enough to play 1/2 it'll only take you an extra week or ten days presuming you don't run bad

have a look at this thread to see why this is important

    yeah its scary stuff

Well done TacT. I too have found that keeping poker money completely separate from life money helps when playing and when moving up. I just found it too hard to drop 100 euro when I had only left 400 in the poker account and not go on tilt and have to stop playing. Its nicer psychologically to drop 100 out of a 2000 pool.

Oh, and that post is a god send robin. Feel much better about the 5 buy in swing (at 200NL) I was stuck in a few hours ago :)

One thing to remember is that the likelihood of a 30-buyin downswing occurring is negligible really so I certainly won't be worrying about it

yeah obviously thats the most extreme situation, but the possibility of a 10-15 buyin downswing is a lot more realistic and worrying

Hence the reason for a 30+ BI bankroll.
