Soil pipes - how many should there be?

In a case where there is a bathroom at the back and an ensuite at the front, both on the first floor, and each having a soil pipe, the only vent is on the bathroom one. Should there be one on the ensuite soil pipe also? What are the implications of not having a vent there?

I believe that you only need one per two or three houses if they are within 10m of each other and connected to a common sewer pipe.

The main reason for the vent pipe is to reduce the risk of water being syphened out of the traps, you could use an air admittance valve instead.
