Have been tiring to reinstall xp pro for a while now but every time I try it gets as far as the choose the partition to install the os on and then hangs if it doesn't hang on that screen then on the one just before it where you can select to install a new or recover a previous version of xp.

It's an Acer 5020, amd 64 1.8 turion, 1 GB ram, x700 gfx, 100 GB hdd (not sata). I can still use the old version of xp home that is on it with no problems, plays games like bf2 with no problems (taught it was a heat problem as when installing it would get to the choose install partition and then hang after a few minutes).
I have used this xp cd to install on other laptops without a problem.

The laptop has been sent back to Acer twice, once for a faulty headphone jack and the second time for a rattle in the laptop. It's out of warranty now and I have only recently gotten around to tiring reinstalling xp.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks,
    J

Could be memory related, worth a try running memtest.

To see if it is hard drive related, could you try a Linux live bootdisk? Boot into Linux and see if you can do anything with the disk (e.g. format it, generate files on it). Failing that, you may want to go the whole hog and try installing Linux.

This will give you an indication as to whether or not it is the hard drive.
