I have around 600-700 to spend on an amp head, my style is mostly modern metal stuff (melodic riffs, tremelo picking, alternate picking lead stuff etc.) and Proggy clean stuff (along the lines of Tool). Im not fussy about effects or anything like that as I own a line 6 pod xt that has all the effects I could want on it, Im just after something with a great tone. Any suggestions?

The best amp for Modern Metal = ENGL.

If you can manage it, stretch to €750 and get yourself a used Fireball, that seems to be the going price on www.adversts.ie and a couple of those babies have popped up now and again.

One great thing about the Fireball is that the cleans are fantastic. I do a lot of Opeth style playing, so when I was looking for a new amp, it was essential that it had a good clean channel.

Anyway, another suggest I could give which is closer to your bottom line, is a Laney GH50L, which is the 50 watt version of the amp Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth uses. That should give you a decent idea of how it'll sound. I've not played one myself, but it's certainly worth checking out, and well within your budget. ;)

    Hope all that helps.

here's the engl fireball currently up for 850 http://www.adverts.ie/showproduct.php?product=3682&cat=16

alternatively if you like the look of that laney i would seriously recommend you save a bit more and get this one http://www.thomann.de/ie/laney_vh100r.htm
i've seen a few people play throught them and they sound totally monsterous.

I was actually considering the Fireball, it's not that much of a stretch, just might have to mug a few OAPs on the way to shops ;)

The other head I was considering was one of them new fangled Randall heads, (cant remember exact name, G300 or something like that) with a single tube pre-amp and a solid state poweramp, but I've heard the cleans arnt great on it. Any samples of the cleans on your Fireball Karl? Would probably give me a good idea since you use line 6 effects aswell.
