The Best Horror (Without Vampires and Aliens)

It just occured to me whjile watching a Music channel (Kerrang I think), I saw Metallicas One. For those that dont know, the Vid features clips from the film "Johnny Got His Gun". I saw that film when I was a teenager, bad time to watch a flick like that! I was horrified. Literally. The main character suffers a fate worse than I anything I have seen in a film. Simply put, its the worst ive ever felt after watching a motion picture. (Now I was 18, but its still raw) Watching the video brought it all back, I think if there is a Hell, thats what they would give me.

Anyone got a similar impact to relate from a film thats not an obvious horror, but still sticks in the memory?

IT freaked me out as a kid. Definitly one to scare your younger brother or sister with.

DaBreno, some of the best horrors are the ones that mess with your head instead of trying to use scare tactics.

Can't really think of too many right now.

QFT Dude, it hit my own sweet spot regarding horror. I could watch that film any amount of times, it would never be a film at this stage.

Robert Wises' The Haunting from 1963 (not the awful remake)
a real head wrecker of a film, was it real or did she imagine it all, is she the nutjob or is the house really haunted.

DaBreno do you mean scariest film that isnt a horror? I think that may be what you're suggesting?

I think The Exorcist is quite disturbing without the use of monsters etc as is the Exorcism of Emily Rose.

I also found Se7en quite disturbing for a non horror film.

It takes alot to frighten me tho so i cant think of any non horror films

I concurr, IT is an important part of growing up. Every 8 year old should watch it. :p

Seriously though, I had severe sleeping problems after watching that film as a kid.

There's also been talk for a while of a remake.

Nah, watched Poltergeist 1 and 2 were shown on TV over the last two weeks. Watched them. Can't say it was scary at all. But I can see how it would freak a kid out

Poltergeist 3 happened to be on last night. Would have to say the thrid movie would scare kids more in my opinion. The mirrors tricks were done pretty good. Had me wondering :)

It is indeed! :) Sorry guys, I should have been more clear. I meant films that feature no traditional Horror elements ie. Ghosts, Zombies, Aliens. My own example was just about people but I found it awesomley terrifying in places.

Dumbo. That elephant freaks me out...

Nah, I think the Sixth Sense freaked me out immensely when I was younger. Only one I can think of right now.

OP, if you think the movie is bad, I strongly recommend you read the book. It is the most disturbing thing ever.
