howyez... i just dont get it... how the hell is m4a at 48Kbps the same quality as mp3 at 192Kbps... ive converted all my music over to m4a as im getting a sony ericsson walkman phone for christmas and the quality of m4a is just blowing me away.. an average song at 192kbps for mp3 is about 4-5 megabytes whereas the m4a at 48kbps is only around 1.5 megs... can someone tell me how the hell this works out? thanks to this marvel of technology i cant fit my 20gig music collection on a 4gig memory card.. wonders..

Wikipedia offers a an explanation on the working of AAC and it's features plus how it is better than MP3 in certain fields.

M4A is just a container like MP4 or MKV the audio is encoded in AAC.

If you used iTunes as the encoder it would probably have used 128kbps as the default setting for the bit rate

You can change the bit rate in the preferences\importing tab in iTunes or use alternate software to the encoding like dBPoweramp.

Don't know what Apple encodes into but you should be aiming for HE-AAC with low bit rates on the phone for optimal quality (according to the specs it supports AAC+ = HE-AAC).

In order to setup dBPoweramp after installing the program ignore the mp3 trial and go to this page and download this file to enable AAC support then go to this page and download the Nero AAC encoder and drop all the files from the zip into the dBPoweramp folder* and you will now be able to encode audio using Nero's encoder which is one of the best.

    *C:\Program Files\Illustrate\dBpowerAMP\Compression\Nero Digital Audio (AAC)

When you select Nero AAC as the format to rip to in the compression settings menu you can select a bit rate. Try the ABR 48kbps setting and see how it turns out from their.
