family-friendly policies

    Hi, posting this here cos I want to go unregistered.

    Does anyone know much about family-friendly policies in the workplace? What are they and how are they implemented? In my job (I don't want to say where/what I do) they talk about them but don't seem to have any such policies really. Finding the whole work-life balance difficult.

    Any info appreciated, thnx!

    There are a number of ways a company can offer this type of thing, including:

    Job Sharing
    Reduced Hours (permanent or temporary)
    Sabbatical
    Tele-working

    However, apart from the last one, these all involve a reduction in your income (although some companies will offer a once-off incentive for taking up one of the other schemes).

    The most obvious family-friendly policy I can think of is flexi-time. I'm sure that there are lots of parents who tailor their working hours to suit their children's school hours, etc.

    Actually, it doesn't even need to be proper flexi-time to be a lot more family friendly. Jobs with pre-agreed alternate working hours (which some companies like to pretend is proper flexi-time) can be structured to suit family life and school hours a lot better.

    Look at the public sector. They have things like flexi hours, part time, job sharing, term time stuff like that. Of course it depends on your skill set. What area do you work in?
