Sky HD subscription

I just got a new HD Ready TV last week and want to upgrade to Sky HD. Already have Sky + but when I call up Sky they tell me that I can't get a Sky HD card without a Sky HD box and so won't let me upgrade. There's no point in getting the box installed without the card. My local dealer tells me that Sky are a bunch of morons and that you can order the card before you have the box. Is there anyway to do this online rather than talking to some muppet on the phone?

I've only personally installed a few SkyHD boxes, but none have needed new cards. The only box that needed a new card was the retailer one, for shop display.

Maybe some cards work and some don't?

You definitely don't need a new card. You need a SKY HD box and then they can add the channels to your existing card. If you are retaining your existing SKY+ box as a multi-room subscription, then SKY will send you an additional card which you will use on your new HD box.

Why on earth would you want to upgrade to Sky HD without a Sky HD box...?? :eek:

Anyways, as far as I know the cards are the same...

The SkyHD box works as a Sky or Sky+ according to existing card. Then they update the card over the air to enable the SkyHD function, which can only be done on a SkyHD box.

The only send new cards for either boxes ordered or existing box you have. They won't send a card and can't update a card for a hypothetical box you might order or buy.

Is there a deal on at the moment for HD box? checked the sky site and quotes 499 + 75 (i dont have sports or movies)

Is the update done through the phone line? Is there any point when installing a new HD box that the phone line is required?

No updates are done over phone lines. Check the Sky HD contract - it may or may not require the box to be connected to an active phone line (so they can make a few more quid from you with interactive services).
