Just wondering what it takes to get a Laser card?

I have a 3rd level Student a/c with BOI. Just thought I'd ask here before I drop into my local branch tomorrow.

They are normally offered as part of a current account and there is a government levy of 10 euro per year I think. Go in and fill out an application anyway. I'm not sure how it works if you have a student account.

If its a new 3rd level a/c you should have got one when you opened it, but I suspect not. All you need to fill in is small piece of paper with your name , account num and signature. They will order it there and then for you and usually you have to call to the branch to collect. PIN remains the same assuming that you have an ATM card already. You only have to fill out the form detailing income etc if its a cheque guarenteed laser card that you want. However if you want a student credit card in some cases you have to wait 6 months before you can apply. Talk to the branch an tell them you want a laser card. Should be not be a prob really because you have to have money in the account before you use them.

Usually you have to ask but it really depends, because it costs more in gov tax people dont usually want to get it if asked. O BTW the levy is 20eur per yr but you will be only charged 10eur for this yr because u already have an ATM.

It's weird I've had an ATM for 4 years now and not once have I been charged the levy. Bet now when I have a laser card I'll finally be charged for it!

AIB will give almost anyone a Laser Card (ask for it by 24hour banking). BOI are a bit more traditional and your branch might veto the request.

That is quite true, but usually there should be no prob unless it is a chq guarenteed laser card, income starts to play a part then

I had a third level account with BOI and a fulltime job+savings, applied for a Laser/Debit card. Got refused because I had missed a direct debit payment a few months before I applied for the Laser card. The killing thing, was that they're constanly bombarding me with crap about getting a credit card.

AIB gave me a Laser card, no questions asked.

Thats ridiculus. It doesnt surprise me with the attidute of some staff. Power tripping comes to mind. Seriously I would march back into your branch and DEMAND that they give you a laser card. Fill out no forms go up to customer service and tell them you want one.

I work(ed) for Bank of Ireland - ALL current accounts where the primary account holder is over 18 years of age are now automatically granted a Laser card on their account. For existing account holders this is upon request and it is the default for all new account holders.

sounds good, however I'll bet the "3rd level" current account is not considered to be a "current account" within the meaning of the new rule, and considering the age cohort of boards it is likely that many of the readers are using "3rd level accounts" either because they are in college or graduated long ago and are still enjoying zero fees hoping the bank doesn't notice LOL

edit: update just tried a friends "3rd level" atm card (a card with the name "3rd level" and no human name given out on the first day of college when BOI signed up new accounts) in a credit card terminal here in the office it says "Maestro" on the screen, but any attempt to take money results in a "declined", then again that could be because he has no money

Okay, I know this from before I worked for the Bank and I worked in retail... you can force a Laser transaction through a regular 365 ATM card but I don't know how it worked, or if it would work again (it was my personal account, I was bored and messing).

Secondly, I worked in the Trinity Branch of Bank of Ireland - i.e. a Branch specifically for the staff and students of Trinity College. Needless to say, students are just as entitled as every other current account holder over the age of 18 to a debit card. Most will not however carry the Chq Gtd symbol but not many students use chqs anyway.

FYI I tried his card again, after his wages hit it, and it still says declined, the card is a pass card with a magstripe and no chip
