My father's CD burner has stopped working and he has asked me for a new one. I don't really have the time to install an internal one for him, so I was thinking of getting him an external one, but he only has a USB 1.1 port. Would the transferrate of this be too slow, to burn CDs or DVD or would he be ok with it?

You are considering sticking an external writer with external power supply, cables etc on your father's pc, on a USB 1.1 with all the speed issues that will follow instead of popping open a case and taking off 4 screws and 2 maybe 3 cables? If it were me, I'd put you up for adoption.

Agreed with Hagar. Installing an internal IDE drive will take you no longer than 2-3 minutes and the drives these days cost feck all compared to an external one. Also you would probably have speed issues with a USB 1.1. Go for the internal.

If memory serves, USB 1.1 will allow for writing a CD at 4x max, which is 600kBps. 1x DVD writing speed is 1385kBps, so you'd only get less than 0.5x DVD writing. This means a 2 hour write time, if it even works at all.

Replacing an internal drive is a 5 minute job and won't require any software changes except maybe an upgrade of the DVD writing software, such as Nero, if support for the new drive is required. The drive will cost less than €50 too, an external would probably be in the €100-150 range.

USB 1.1 is *pain* for any file transfers. Don't expect to even get close to the theoretical 12Mbit/s transfer rate :(
