Strange Media Player problem...

    When I play videos of any sort, any format, nine tens out of then they are either in black or white, or the colour is extremely faint. Have not changed anything, nor installed anything recently prior to this beginning to happen. It only started happening this morning. Maybe once in ten times I open MP the video is in proper colour. No other problems elsewhere in games, in-game video or the like.

    Ideas?

    Have you enabled high quality mode in Windows Media Player if so untick it

    Tools->Options->Performance->Advanced

    If you haven't try Media Player Classic and see if the problem persists in either VRM7 or VRM9 rendering mode

    View->Options->Playback->Output

    Other suggestions if none of the above pan out update display drivers & update Direct-X to October 2006 build.

    Also its worth downloading the k-lite mega codec pack too.

    Tried all that, tried a few different players. Tried updating dx and drivers as well, and I already have all the codecs under the sun. Video files still in either black and white, faint colour, or once in a dozen tries, proper colour...:confused:

    I had this myself a few weeks ago on a new install. Found a restart did the job. Just to try aswell. If you have another pc/laptop copy over some media and check if it plays the same on that.

    Those "mega" codec packs are more likely to cause more problems than fix anything I would suggest removing them as they install duplicate codecs that end up fighting over the permissions to decode what.

    Only install codecs that you need not the everything & the kitchen sink.

    The problem you are having is usually related to the overlay VMR mode and the graphics driver.

    If you have WMP11 installed in the same advanced area where you could disable high quality mode untick the box for "Turn on DirectX video acceleration"

    Also if go into your graphics cards colour correction properties and reset everything to default just in case some custom setting is being retained.

    If that doesn't solve it then remove all video codecs from the system, uninstall the display drivers and run driver cleaner to rid any bits remaining. Now reinstall the latest WHQL driver (no betas) & now install ffdshow as your decoder and see if anything changes.
