€2 A Drink

I was wondering if it would be possible to create a list of the places around Dublin that do €2 a drink on selected nights. I know reds do it on a Monday and think spirit do it on a Thursday. I have also hear rumours of xx1 being €2 on a Wednesday but that is unconfirmed.
It would be pretty cool if we could find somewhere to go every night of the week.:) :):)
    Thanks,
    Duckmusic

Duckmusic, read the charter please, the idea is good, the delivery leaves a little to be desired.

i think the blue note on capel street run a 2euro a drink promo on wednesdays.
they offer either bottles of tiger beer or else vodka and red bull.

it was on last wednesday but i dont know if its weekly or was a once off.

it wouldnt be a major draw for me as tiger beer wouldnt be my first choice,
and if i ever touch another vodka red bull again, it'll probably be too soon.

Point taken, but surely you cant deny that the reason people like the €2 idea is to over do it and not have their wallet too badly hurt in the morning.

Anyway, any others out there ?

Weren't 'Happy Hour's' banned a few years back?

People like the €2 idea for many different reasons, I think the charter is pretty clear on the attitude and discussion we would like to see here on alcohol, but more importantly it's clear on what we don't want.

Adult discussion of what is a very heavily regulated industry.

Now that's enough mod stuff, back to your discussions of inexpensive hooch.

That's them but there were also flyers in college for somewhere on a Tuesday night. Can't remember where it was though.

Capital on a Monday night I believe, whenever a Primal Scream song is played. At least it was the night I was in there, could be a different band every week

They are banned, these are "happy days", you can change prices day by day, you can also raise prices during the day, just not lower them. So places could have happy hours from opening hours onwards, just like many used to, opening at 5 with cheap drink till 7 to get punters in.

There are a few loopholes places could use. Say that a particular drink is only €2 a bottle, but simply not stock it until when you want the "happy hour" to be, once the hour is up, imagine that! fresh out of it, come back next week.

That 4 shots for €5 is a bit OTT and not right, I remember some place on wexford street did tequila offers, cops were often called due to fights. Happy days are a little different than happy hours, esp. if it is just beer, happy hours suffered from last order syndrome early on. esp. if it was spirits.

XXI does a €3 a drink from Monday to Wednesday.

Also Capital (as someone else mentioned) does promotions most of the week. Plus their €5 cocktails all week before 12

  • Citi Bar is €2 a drink on Tuesday's...

    not Thursdays

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,908 ✭✭✭Alkers

That would make sense, think that's what I saw the flyers for.
So we have Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday!
Anyone have Thursday, Friday or Saturday :D

As far as i remember, the law says you must sell drink at the same price for the whole day, so if you open at 9pm for €2 a drink you have to sell it at €2 all night.

Barcode up the price of their drink after 12 dont they? Maybe the fact after 12 its technically the next day is why they get away with it?

Then again, Barcode let 15 year olds in.

Trampco do cheap drink on a monday, they did anyway i presume they still do? Spirit do certain shots and pints cheap aswell. You'll be doing well to find good promotions on firday and saturday night.

A good few pubs in town do that aswell. They do have it mentioned on the price list though.

    From Oasis.gov.ie
From 18th August, 2003 it is illegal in Ireland to sell alcohol at reduced prices for a limited period during any day. (In other words, 'happy hour' is now prohibited).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,908 ✭✭✭Alkers

Hmmm - what about selling at increased prices in the evenings...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭duckmusic

OK, so far this is the line up

    Redz ~ Monday
    Citi Bar ~ Tuesday
    Bondi ~ Wednesday
    Spirit ~ Thursday
    ?????? ~ Friday
    ?????? ~ Saturday
    Bondi ~ Sunday

Don't let me down, I'm sure we can fill the week up. I don't want to be forced to pay up to €3 on a Friday or Saturday

I'm confused. So pubs that up their prices during the evening are doing so illegally as they are selling them cheaper at early periods No?

Yes but this is not policed at all in good old Ireland, seems to me kind of unfair taking advantage of people when they are drunk by raising the prices. I like the idea of the 12 midnight loophole though :D

They can raise the price over the day but they can not lower it.

XX1 is the old Club 21 (I think!). Its on D'olier street. Citi Bar is beside the Foggy Dew on Dame Street. Its only open a few months.

Interesting, surely though, the original price at the start of the day was a discounted price in that case?

If you want to drag your self out as far as the vortex in dunshauglin (only 20mins from o'connel st according to thir old radio ad ) drinks are 2 euro all night every night ( but i think its 3 euro on sat nights ) no pints but all the bottles and spirits there hence you have planty of muppets drinking 2pints of fat frog that only cost them 6 euro !!

Correct, as I had said earlier. The PDF of the law is out there I had it downloaded before.

Yes, you could look at it that way. They see it as an increase, like how many bars charge more for late pints to pay for the late licence, cheaper than a niteclub and they make the money back. It is one of the sort of loopholes I mentioned. Especially for "niteclubby" bars that only open at 5pm, have cheaper drinks till 7 to get the punters in. Or my other loophole, run out of the drink on offer.

Most pubs are open earlier and want the lunch time customers so do not want cheap drink, and do not guzzle that early. 5-7 most people are getting ready to head out, hit the pub, tank up and head off.

That is certainly a convenient way of looking at it, I suppose the listed price displayed prominently will be the morning/daytime price.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

found it! but I had previously found it in a big pdf
20.—(1) A licensee shall not supply intoxicating liquor on the licensed premises at a reduced price during a limited period on any day.

    (2) In subsection (1), "reduced price" means a price less than that regularly being charged for the intoxicating liquor during an earlier period after 10.30 a.m. (12.30 p.m. on a Sunday) on the day concerned.

    (3) A person who contravenes subsection (1) is guilty of an offence under this section and liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding—

    (a) for a first offence, €1,500, or
    (b) for a second or any subsequent offence, €2,000.

    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/ZZA31Y2003S20.html

So yes, the price on the door would be the "happy hour"/daytime price. Bit of a scam really, they can never really be fined for displaying incorrect prices! they could put up low pices and only charge that for the first minute of opening. Whole thing is full of loopholes I am very surprised nobody is taking advantage of them, maybe they are.
