Do you like training with the Gi? 16 votes

Gi helps beginners defensive game (the foundation of a good ground grappling game)

the extra friction/handles makes it harder to escape bottom/submissions. have to rely on proper technique rather than brute force

No-Gi helps your offensive game. the lack of handles/friction helps makes it difficult to secure top position/submission.

i train both and encourage my students to train both.

Should it be an even 50-50 split be bewteen Gi/no-Gi ?

I love both because they both have their own little nuances but I'm only a beginner grappler.

Can't speak for BJJ. In TKD we call it a debok, not a gi (difference between Korean and Japanese), but a uniform just the same. I find my V-neck very comfortable for working out and sparring, so I wouldn't part with it.

My feelings on the gi are well known. But, like most things I'm involved in, it starts off as a joke, then I won't back down and over time it transforms into dogma.

    bjj-fighter, shorten your sig.

Spill your thoughts O'Reilly. It's just a forum.

Personally, I don't think I'm anywhere near intricate enough in BJJ to assess if the Gi has helped me or hindered me. I feel in Gi, it's slower, so I'm thinking alot more with my escapes - while no gi, i feel I move alot more. Gi can give you habits that won't translate over to no-gi. My thoughts.

Hey I thought I was getting good until I put on a Gi:D

Wearing it has improved my escapes on bottom, as John pointed out above you can't shrimp as easily or get a leg up etc. But its also improved my top game in guard as I used to relax and allow myself to get broken down out of posture as I knew I could always slip out and regain posture. If I'm in a gi and someone breaks my posture its much much harder. Now even in no gi I'm always head-up-arms-on!

    In short, both for me.

I think thats what most people mean.:)

I am curious then, most people seem to think that the Gi is a useful training aid (a sort of resistance training for BJJ), so, when you train, are you trying to get better without the Gi or with the Gi?
(ie "I train in the Gi to get better without it", or "I train without it to learn a move/position easier so i can do it with the Gi")

I used to think the gi was pointless for the purposes of mma and nogi sub wrestling but then it dawned on me that all the worlds best sub wrestlers train nogi! Marcelo Garcia, Roger Gracie, The Ribeiros, Leo Viera, Royler gracie etc etc...

Doesn't eddie bravo only train nogi?

Colm, what are your feelings on the Gi?
