Guitar weekend

Ive been thinking for some time about organising a Guitarists weekend somewhere in Ireland.

A weekend where guitarists (including bassists) of all levels can get together to hang out, talk about and learn about their instrument and chosen styles.

Ideally it would be great to have loads of tutors and speakers from all different styles but I think at this stage that might be a bit ambitious. So maybe it would be best to keep it fairly simple and fairly general.

Im thinking of maybe a Friday night to Sunday in perhaps a hotel somewhere in the country. Somewhere that wouldn’t mind a bit of noise!

Im wondering what the interest might be for something like this. Obviously there would be a significant cost involved, possibly 2-300 euro a head with accommodation etc. not sure.
Would any of you guys go? Would you be prepared to pay for the privilege?

I want to gauge the interest level before going any further with it. I guess the format would be dependant on numbers but I imagine it would be something along the lines of

    Friday night: Meet and Greet.

    Saturday morning: tutorials, discussions
Saturday afternoon: break into groups for workshops etc.
Saturday night: Band and Open Mic sessions
    Sunday morning: breakfast and depart

I know this is all a bit vague and id be more than open to suggestions and contributions. At the moment its just an idea im throwing out.

    Well?

    Sounds great Macca.

Great idea ! You can count me in. It would be nice to have something like that to look forward to in dreary January or February !

Mac, this would take a lot of organising. I don't know if you have done anything like this before. There are many styles and if people feel left out etc the feedback could be bad. I would be interested if you do try it.

I was thinking of trying to organise a Jamming club where we rented out a Hall or room somewhere and organised a jam once a week. The levels would have to be kept quite low and the main point would be that whoever attended would have to have an open mind and be willing to play any musical style. It would develop over time and you never know what could become of it. Your not going to satisfy everyone but it would be great to be able to have live music to jam to and also to provide live music for others to jam to.

This could be a starting point for the weekend.

I take it that this is to satisfy the need for us bandless musicians(me) to actually jam with others and progress our abilities and styles.

    .
Would this not be excluding beginners and inexperienced players who cant play any musicial style. The original post stated players of all levels. I think these people should catered for as well as the pros.

Having an open mind and being willing to try different styles has nothing to do with how well you can play, just that you want to play.

I dunno id go if it were close to me but if it was far away i wouldnt be too pushed about going, id recomend holding it in around dublin as thats where is a bigger population and therefore more guitarists/bassists(in theory) therefore more people would show.

Great idea there is always need for this kind of thing IMO. I went to a Guitar Day in Wicklow a couple of years ago and it was great. Not much going on though and I was the best there (and I'm crap) but something in Dublin would attract a lot of people so I wouldn't worry about that, and as long as it's not too expensive...

It would take a lot of organising but if there's a few people behind it as well as yourself it should be doable.

You could book a few bands too

    Go for it!

Rigsby. I'm a beginner, probably always will be as I am talentless when it comes to guitar, and as Feylya said there should be room for all levels to play along. It's a jam dammit!

That's fair enough. I'm a beginner too. My point was that to play all styles ( e.g. jazz ) no matter how willing, you'd need to be fairly advanced. Anyway it is a great idea.

jamming with other guitarists ain't gonna improve your playing much unless you have a drummer(s) present.

    I'd be interested though....

It could turn into a guitar wankfest which would be just horrible. Macattack there's nothing inherently wrong with your idea, it just needs so much work and organisation there are only 2 logical reasons you would take something like this on:
    1) to make money
    2) for the love of it

If I were to try my hand at something like this I think the financial incentive would be best, sell tickets & hotel packages and know your minimum head count to break even. There's nothing wrong with doing something like this for profit, in fact many people would trust it much more if it was more "business like" rather than just oh yeah we're a load of guitarists getting together for a jam...

Besides, we could all hate each other :p
