Optical drive problem with archives

Basically, whenever I try to copy or exact from an archive any sort of data from a cd or dvd to my laptop, I get an error message about data cycle something after a few seconds and the files fail to copy/extra.

Retail games install/read fine, etc, but its painful trying to read regular cd-r or dvd-r media. But recently I backed up about 10 gb of files from my old pc before selling, and when I try to copy any bit of it to my laptop I get this error. I had this before, replaced the drive thinking it was faulty, but exact same problem.

Driving me mad. Any suggestions? Its a philips dvd-+rw sdvd8441.

    Check for a firmware upgrade?
    What discs are you using?
    How are they stored?
Are there any scratches, dust, etc?

    Latest firmware. Brand new drive.

Does not matter what media - have tried dvd-rw, dvd-r, dvd+r, cd-r, all the same result.

Discs are all in perfect condition. Can view discs, view files, no problem, but when go to extract archives I get a data redundancy error or something similar. It happens every time, with every archive, on any cd. It's without a doubt the drive, as the said discs worth fine on any other machines. Just don't know what it could be, as its happening in a brand new drive. I assumed the original was faulty.

Run Memtest+ just in case copy errors from optical media are sometimes a symptom of defective RAM.

There is a PA49 firmware update for the Philips 8441 one Gateways website if you feel like chancing it, at least one person confirmed it worked on their non-gateway Acer notebook (worst case scenario the drive wont work in a notebook only a PC till you reflash alternate firmware).

Yes I tried that, it worked but didn't solve problem. I've noticed alot of problems floating around the web on the sdvd8441 actually just through a simple google. This is becoming a right pain in the ass as I can't put music, video, etc onto my laptop without having to resort to usb sticks. I'll give memtest a go now, thanks 8t8
