If I had money burning a hole in my pocket right now, I'd get a Core 2 Duo and an 8800GTX.
But by next July there'll probably be quad-core CPUs everywhere.
ATI/AMD are supposed to be releasing a DX10 card sometime in February... and I suppose nVidia might roll out a few more cards in the 8xxx series.
So yeah, could be a very different picture in a few months time.

    I'm sure he meant 2700-2800.

Like was said, post back here closer to your build date... as hardware changes all the time, a rig worth 3g's now will probably be worth 1g or less in july. 7 months is a loooooong time in the hardware world, just have a look at what the last 3 months alone has spewed out.

Keep an eye on technews websites, and start recording release dates for important components coming out next summer and budget for whether you'll want them or not.

there are rumours that nvidia are releasing the 8900gtx around the same time as the r600 launch, and a few others in the geforce 8 series.

but yeh, it's gonna be a whole different ball game by then.
