Hey folks. I got a 360 yesterday and Id love to hook it up to my PC for file sharing of music/video etc but there seems to be a problem.
I've got the ethernet cable running into my router which in turn is wired into my modem and PC. But for some reason the 360 wont see my PC.
It will go online and update firmware etc but it just doesnt see the computer.
I've tried the new Zune software and even got windows media connect. I cant use Media player 11 due to the windows verification thing. Even though its a (reasonably) legit version of XP im using. Anyone got any ideas?

Try http://www.xbox.com/pcsetup It will give you a tool to set your pc up.

When I had problems at first it was down to my firewall. I was running sygate at the time I think. These days i just run my windows one tho.

Ive tried this a few times and im getting the same problems as bombidol, does anyone actually have this working using the zune software?? I know others are using Tversity, ive tried that too but havent a clue how to go about it. I know someone posted a tutorial about how to do it but that makes no sense either. O and does anyone have this working using Media player 11 ?? As you can tell im not much on this subject

I'm figuring that you're using the ethernet cable supplied with the console from what you said..

I heard that the ethernet cable that comes with the 360 is a crossover cable, for xbox to xbox system link play. You'll need a normal straight ethernet cable to connect it to the router.

im not using that cable. im using a bog standard one.

working when you hook the 360 up to the pc directly?

Have you disabled your firewall? (firewall always blocks connect for me).

both the firewall on windows and on my router are turned off and its still not connecting.

Don't mean to hijack the thread bombidol but I'd really appreciate the posters answering this as I have the same problem. Under Media Sharing in WMP11 the pc sees the xbox but the xbox doesn't see any pc. So can't go live or stream media.

I have mine working since last December, Xbox 360 has the wireless adapter, connected to Linksys 54G router, PC is a 4 year old Dell running Windows Xp SP2, at the moment I Use Windows Media Player 11.

I had problems before with Windows media connect but it was all down to my firewall and Norton anti virus which took a long time to get rid of, also experimented with opening ports on my router as sometimes it would not allow internal traffic between the wired and wireless lan.

Also sometimes it might be worth getting windows up to date with all the latest fixes, also try shutting down each anti-virus, firewall, tool until you can see the Xbox 360 in the Media Connect dialog box.

Still though it can be very frustrating when it does not work.

it took me a while to figure out what was going wrong. I have to disable my firewall (zonealarm) to get system connect to work.

This makes me think you're confused. Are you talking about media connect or using your pc/laptop as a bridge to connect to Xbox Live?

You don't need to use media-connect to get onto live/download stuff.

    Again, like Furp:
    1) make sure the firewall is disabled.
    2) make sure you've updated windows.
    3) make sure you've updated windows media player.
    4) try disabling the anti virus as well, as well as any active program. (get process explorer for free off the net to see what's running in the backround).
    5) Make sure the media connect icon is loaded in the bottom right bar of windows.
    6) Run the new connection menu on the 360 - it should test whether your pc is allocating the 360 an IP address etc. It'll at least tell you where the problem is. If all of the menu's fail then I don't have a clue.

I sorted out Xbox Live tonight. Now my only remaining problem is a pc connection. My windows Media Player 11 can 'see' the xbox ... it is in its media sharing devices but when I go to the console it just says it's not connected to any pc. On the the test media it confirms an IP address but fails the Selected PC test. Have brought windows firewall to low and nortons to off but to no avail.

So are you trying to use the pc as a bridge or what then? Why wouldn't it work before?

Lad, turn it OFF. Disconnect from the net to minimise the danger but you need to completely disable the firewall/anti-virus etc. one by one till you find out what's interfering with the file sharing.

I'm actually not absolutely sure how i sorted out the xbox live connection ... go figure. I reckon the reason i'm having problems with the pc connection might be that I've other computers on my home wireless network. Anyway, don't want to hijack this thread as i said. If responses to the OP's question help me that's good enough. Thanks.

my laptop at home hasn't been connected to the net since we moved apt so I'm still running WMP 10 with Media Connect installed separately. I don't even mess around with WMP. I just boot the 360 and the laptop. Start XP and disable the firewall. Then I go into music/computer on the appropriate 360 blade and off I go - party jukebox ahoy.

I just read that WMP 11 has Media Connect integrated into it. So you guys probably have different issues to play with.

All I can say is try the below
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/devices/wmconnect/troubleshooting.aspx

weedhead - I had this problem with Media Player 11 (cant turn sharing on no matter what!) this is a known MS bug and cannot be fixed. Try uninstall WMP11 and re-install.

I gave up trying to get it to work to be honest and switched to TVersity (use google for a tutorial!) and it works fine.

funny thing is as soon as i got that working WMP11 decided it would share with my xbox - now both solutions work for me.

    weird.

edit: sorry i forgot to add that you can manually turn on the sharing service in WMP11 by hitting - Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Services: there should be an option there to manually restart media sharing. once done go back to WMP11 and try to start sharing again and it should work.

Funny thing is that WMP11 'sees' the xbox. When i click 'Library>media sharing' there's the xbox icon with a nice green tick beside it. My next step is to disable the firewall and/or try TVersity. I'm away for a few days so will try this on my return. Thanks for help so far. Hope the advice is helping bombidol too.

TVersity did the job in terms of streaming pictures. Interface is rubbish tho on the PC. Also it has about 1100 internet videos on it which I can't delete and make searching for videos on my tv/xbox a pain. Fruitless anyway as any video I pick it claims it can't play back!!! Baby steps I guess but any answers welcome. Why the hell don't WMP11 or Zune work????
