    Ok folks, here go's...

buying a new laptop(as is the case once every 5 years) and i want a serious spec, has to have intel core duo processor of some description, serious graphics card, doesnt have to be all that mobile i.e. a 17" screen or 15" would be preferable, windows media centre and possibly a dvi connection or HDMI to connect to the tv and all the usual trimmings

So please fire away and let me know if ye have any recommendations

oh and a vista upgrade would be nice

lookin at a HP DV9088ea at the mo, seems nice but if anyone has any comments on this lemme know

    Thanking you in advance!!!

    How about a Toshiba Qosmio.

    http://ie.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/jsp/seriesHomepage.do?service=IE&SERIES_ID=113974

Not sure of prices though but I'd imagine they're around the 2k mark

    What about a Dell XPS?

    How about this?

    http://www.elara.ie/products/detailsfullft.asp?productcode=ECE1270648#spec
    €1,722.62

Or for quite a bit cheaper for the same laptop try here

    http://www.laptopsdirect.ie/Fujitsu_Siemens_Amilo_Xi_Laptop_LKN:GBR-101100-035/version.asp
    €1,595.58

17" screen, dvi port, great graphics card, good processor, 2gb of ram 160gb hard disk (2x80gbs). No media centre edition but frankly there is better open source software out there for that. Try this. http://www.team-mediaportal.com/

I've spent the last couple of days looking and it seems the best value I can see.

I picked up an Acer Aspire 9510 a while back for €1400 (ex. vat) off laptopsdirect.ie

    Cupla Specs:
    2 GB RAM
1.83 GHz Centrino Dual Core CPU
    XP Home (replaced with Ubuntu)
    240 Gig HDD (2 X 120 GB Sata)
    NVidia Geforce 7900 GFX Card
    HDMI & DVI outputs

Nice laptop, just throwing it out there, sounds like something your looking for.

Hi there, I have a 4 week old Dell Inspiron 9400 that might interest you:http://www.adverts.ie/showcat.php?cat=8
It has a powerful T7200 CPU (4MB L2 cache), 7900GS, DVI and VGA out etc.
Pretty much the same machine as the XPS but without the fancy lid and lights :)
    (and well inside your budget)

I think the Acer Aspire 9510 specs are very nice. Though I wish it had an ATI card.

    Screw that!

I would suggest buying a ticket to NY, say 400 return, and spend the 1600 (ca. $2000) on a computer that is way better than anything you could get in Ireland plus you get a holiday.

Every thing in the US is cheaper.... just look at HP.com or Dell.com for the US stores.

I bought a XPS 1710 (and upgraded it to f**k) in the US for $3000 which is about EUR 2,300: it's fe*king amazing. Enough said...although I went to the US for a week for a weeding but I got the comp too.

Whats the spec of your xps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭hollywoodhoppy

wooh! ye think i'm gonna take the xps plunge...sur why not, its gonna break my back but it'll be worth it when i get out of debt!!

ordering it with 512mb 7900gtx card, 2 gigs of ram...geez if it was a car she'd be very torquey!! also tryin to get them to put in an integrated analogue tuner card as it is on the uk website and its stupid we cant get it over here, if all comes to all i'll order it in uk and get it delivered to friends in london!!:D

if anyone else has any suggestions speak now or forever hold your peace :p

shoulda thought of that america idea now ya mention it!!

Holly will you post a review here in a couple of weeks??

    For roughly $3000 (Eur 2,300):

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife
    4GB DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHZ, 2 DIMM
    160GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
    512MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX

If I was to buy the same system in Ireland I would have paid $3,700

The spec there comes to about €4,000 here including vat which equates to about $5,288. Same spec on the American Dell site is just over $6000.
