Wii: Whats the Big Deal?

I've spent the afternoon trying to figure out:

    a) Why anyone in their right mind would go out in the wind and rain for something they could get at a later date.

    b) What the big deal about the Wii is.

    Can anyone enlighten me?

Well a lot of people would like to get one for christmas, to play over the holiday break. It is going to be very hard to get one before christmas unless you ordered over two months ago.

I use to play a lot of games when I was younger, but I've stopped over the last few years as they have just gotten boring and repetitive. However I recently played the Wii at the RDS Toys for Boys Show and it is just so much fun. It is nothing like any other game I've played before, it completely re-energised my interest in games.

This machine will be absolutely great fun at house parties over Christmas with family and friends, it is the type of thing that everyone can play and enjoy, even non gamers.

Zelda is the big draw for me. I wouldn't be in such a rush to get my hands on one if it wasn't for Zelda.

Well it looks like the Wii will be sold out until after Christmas. So if someone doesn't pick it up either on pre-order or being very lucky, a "later date" means at least a month or two away.

Also the question is more "why wait?" If you want a Wii why would you not go out and try and get one tonight? If the Irish put off something because it was raining we would never get anything done.

Yeah, same here. At the moment the other launch titles aren't exactly setting my world alight. But Zelda is Zelda, as they say.

Plus my housemate (female) really wants to have a go with Wii Sports, and I just can't so no to chicks.

Well Nintendo have been very canny this time around.

They have created a system that can appeal to a lot of different types of people: non-gamers, retro gamers, nintards, hard core, lapsed gamers, DS owners, casual gamers, gadget freaks, ipoders and even OAPs(stretching here).

I think to get an idea of why people really want this you would have to play it and maybe see others play it.

Plus it is tiny and looks kewl.....

    Game on tomorrow!!!!

    Pablo <--- I am becoming a nintard

hard core gamers?me thinks no cause of the graphics.......

Hard Core Gamers: gamers who spend enormous amounts of time gaming.

Likes: Games with content, deep storyline, unusual gameplay, entertaining/funny games....

Not to be confused with: Sony fanyboies, hardened Xbots and graphics whores...

Me thinks yes, because of the games. I see a lot of "hardcore" gamers here getting one. "Hardcore" gamers play Quake, you don't see them leaving it because of the graphics. Besides, WTF *is* hardcore!

    ^see above^

Nintendo fans are pretty much the most hard core gamers. You getting mixed up with the Xbox whinnies who think they are hard core. (that isn't an insult to all the xbox owners, rather a comment on xbox fanboys for whom the xbox was probably one of the first consoles they ever owned and they think they are all cool).

Hard core are people who can trace the gaming heritage back to the ZX spectrum or NES/Master System.

Lol... well depends on the generation.. im 16 and got my first console when i was like 3 :D the lovely megadrive hehe but have played the nes and master system just never owned them...

Can we please stop all this 'hard-core' nonsense? It's embarassing.

As for the Wii, I'm not convinced enough to lay down the cash. I've never bought a console at launch and usually wait until there's at least three 'must have' titles for me to be tempted. The fact that the one essential game - Zelda - will be available on the Gamecube makes the decision easier for me. I'm sure I'll get a Wii eventually - most likely when Smash Brothers, Metroid and Mario are available.

Yeah, that is fairly cool, I'm certainly showing my age. The whole hard core thing is total BS. In the end it is all about the games and just enjoying playing them. Not the console you have or how "cool" it is.

It just bothers me a little that increasingly the term hardcore has come to mean some kids playing Halo on Xbox. There is absolutely nothing hardcore about that.

I can remember when a 48K ram ZX Spectrum was a hardcore gaming rig. Then my mate's parents bought him a PC with a 8MB hard drive... I was so jealous.

    Jetpack FTW!

P.S. I even owned a Pong game with state of the art controllers with twirly knobs. I am sooo l33t

Jetpack ruled and Elite and Ghouls and ghosts and manic miner, ah the memories. I laugh today when people complain about long load times, remember waiting 30 minutes to load just one level off a tape cassette?

Good times... I used to type out lines of BASIC into it just so that I could say I was "programming". The result was pretty uninspiring and my ZX had a dodgy power lead so I usually had to redo it a few times.

I can still remember the awful sounds it used to make when loading up tapes and not to forget the dodgy colours on the screen during loading.

Those were some of the most playable games :D

What a great machine that was - I still have mine although it's long been knackered. I used to love Jetpack and what was that game where you were in a POW camp and you had to tunnel out? Used to love that to bits too. The only problem was the ZX wasn't very reliable and it kept breaking:( I still have 10 or 12 issues of Input magazine with loads of the programmes you were talking about; it'd take 30-60 minutes to put in loads of lines of code just to get the machine to display a clock:D Great fun though.

Which brings me back on topic; OP the Wii is the first machine in years that's put the fun back into gaming and it's something that nearly anyone of any age can enjoy. Give it a try and then you might understand the hype.

i think that sums it up - a lot of us grew up with nintendo and have a special place for the company that broung us mario, zelda, pilotwings, blastcorps, mario-kart, duck hunt, goldeneye and so many more that we could all list - like a lot of peolpe, i havent got the same out of a console in a long time but the wii is something that really brings gaming forward because it is based on a philosphy of games design over the 'pc' logic to gaming of bigger is better with hardware

it comes down to this - i remember the xbox360 launch - i went in, picked up my machine etc but, as much as i enjoy the games on it, it was the same old stuff with prettier graphics and more on screen polygons - but for some reason, the wii has me excited, reading up online, watching videos etc because the wii has the chance of bringing gaming forward to the next generation of gaming - say what you want (and this is from a person who gets all consoles - i dont go into the psp v xbox v wii - no more that i thing that you can olny like comedies and not dramas etc) but the ps3 & xbox havent really brought gaming forward - the last big leap was 3d gaming - this is the next big step - we are seing a real attempt to reevaluate how we play games - again back to the philosophy of nintendo to do something with how we play games and not what we play games on and the power of the machine over a rivals - after all a console aint woth the plastic casing it comes in if it doesnt gave the games - and that is what nintendo have always excelled at - just my 2 cents

Yeah... at least you know that Nintendo games are bound to be tons of fun. The Wiimote just pushes the Big-N fun factor beyond any previous nintendo console.

I have a decent gaming PC rig and an Xbox 360, but the console I'm most excited about is the Wii.

No matter how much behind nintendo may be in the graphics department, they're leagues ahead of the pack when it comes to playability and sheer fun.

Call me a fanboy if you like.

You're not a fan boy though, you've a xbox360 too, which automatically disqualifies you from fanboyism. I've only had Nintendo consoles since the SNES. (Had a GameGear before that.)

Mind you my brothers have a PS2 so any other games I wanna play tend to be on it, or on PC. :)

Yeah... I'm just a gadget/techno geek. I have a cube, PS2, Xbox360, PC and now a Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! I've also had an Xbox, Gameboy and other retro hardware :D

Nintendo games are the most fun though.

Putting aside arcades (yum...), CBS Coleco here (only slightly later than VCS, still less than 8-bit tho). Aaah, Turbo and Dukes of Hazzard with the steering wheel, what memories!

Then over the last...oooh...must be 20 years or thereabouts...[big breath intake]:

    *computer-wise*
C64, Atari 520ST, Amiga 600, 386 Zenith laptop, Apple Macintosh (classic monobloc shape), 486/P1/P2/P3 clones or self-built, currently AMD64 HP (heavily upgraded with non-HP parts) & Dell D600.

    *TV console-wise*
SMS, MD, SNES [...big void, skipped the troubled late 16-bit/early-32 bit era...] DC, PS1, N64, PS2, GC, XB1. Plus retro period in a big way a few years back: NES, 3DO, CDI, PC-E, PC-SGX, Saturn, Jaguar, NeoGeo, Pippin.

    *portable console-wise*
GB classic, GB color, GBA, GBA SP, currently DS original shape. Plus retro period in a big way a few years back: GBP, GBP light, WS, WSC, NGP, NGPC, Supervision, VirtualBoy, GG, Nomad, Lynx 1, Lynx 2, PC-E GT.

I guess that makes me all of a...non-gamer, retro gamer, nintard, hard core, lapsed gamer, DS owner, casual gamer, gadget freak. (PS: Say No to iPods, and I'll offer no comments about the OAP status :D)

I guess ownership history automatically disqualifies me from "fanboyism", eh DamoElDiablo ;)

But I'm certainly a lapsed gamer atm, where TV consoles are concerned. I'm not one for labelling, but I quite like that, 'lapsed gamer' - good one, Pablo-El-Vagabu :)

Oh, btw - my Wii was graciously "obtained" earlier this AM, though I'm not getting my mitts on it 'til Santa's been ;)

I'm with the OP on this one. I can't see the point of buying a Wii unless you have a huge amount of people to play with as it seems to be more geared towards 'social' gaming. Plus the technology just doesn't cut it, for me. Being much less graphically capable than the next gen consoles (more akin to last gen) and nothing close to the PS3 etc. is just awful imo. I would feel like I was stepping back in time. I just cant do that.

Plus I just love to hate everything that everyone else loves :p . But I guess the crazy wiimote gizmos are just too tempting for some people!

Well, when you say technology, you mean graphical capabilities, yes?

Technologically, the Wii is more advanced than both XBox360 and PS3. The Wii remote is a far bigger jump imo than simply another improvement in graphics, just like has happened with the last 6 generations of home consoles.

Agreed 100% Xbox 360 and PS3 technology has been available to PC owners for some time now. The Wii is a new step in the right direction as far as I'm concerned.

I still love my 360 and PC though!

Just to clarify, I have nothing against the likes of the 360. I'm as partial as the next man to a game with amazing graphics. I just think it's a ridiculous thing to say that the Wii's technology isn't good enough.
