Ok, I won't go into all the details, but sufficed to say i've been working at a HTPC build for my parents for the last couple of months and nearly everything that could go wrong has.

Where i'm at now is the bare minimum amount of hardware is installed in my system to get it to boot (i.e. mobo, 1 stick of ram, cpu, onboard graphics)

    The system is as follows:
    ASUS M2N-MX AM2 mobo
    AM2 3000+ CPU
    Twinmos DDR2 5300 512mb RAM
    6100 Onboard gfx

When I power up the cpu fan spins up, motherboard light comes on but there is nothing on the screen. I've tried 2 different PSU, one 350w another the one in my sig (i.e. 700w OCZ) i've also tried using the graphics card in my sig (i.e. 7900GT) but it always comes out the same, nothing on the screen. I've tried 2 different monitors also. So i've narrowed it down to either the motherboard or the cpu. Any ideas as to which it might be? I need to RMA one of them but i'd like to be sure which one it is first.

Also if someone is around dublin and could test an AM2 cpu for me i'd appreciate it.

Do you get any beep codes?/Does it post?

Remove the ram and see if it posts and if you get beep codes.

Remove the CPU and see if you get error codes.

That should narrow it down for ya.

this is typical of my luck... every case i've ever bought has had a post speaker in it and i've never needed any of them, and now that I do, this case (NSK1300) doesn't have one  I guess i'll have to position it close enough to another case so that I can plug in the post speaker from another case.

I'll be back with post details in a few minutes.

Hook up regular speakers to the motherboard.

I think most mobos these days will give the beep codes across speakers...

I am open to correction of course :-)

Did it boot before or is it DOA?

Just as a conclusion to this, the computer is up and running. I hooked up the speaker from another case and the post beeps indicated it was the CPU, so I went to remove the heatsink and out came the cpu with the heatsink? This has never happened before so I concluded that it must of been loose in the socket and not fully clamped in place. I reseated it, replaced the HS, booted up and all seems fine now. Thanks to those who offered help, they should really start a rep+ system here ;)
