Xbox 360 Scratching Discs

I picked up gears of War this friday and played it for about 12-16 hours over the weekend, when I got in from work today I thought I'd give it another bash but when I went to play it I got a "Cannot read disc/faulty disc" error, when I took out the disc I was horrified to see it now sported a multiude of perfectly circular "tree ring" like scratches, I've checked my other game discs and theyre fine. The xbox 360 is in a stable position and hasnt been hit while the disc was in motion so Im wondering has anyone else had the problem and if its caused by the console or the game disc, the console's only about three months old. Im wondering should I bring the console or the game back to the place of purchase or should I contact microsoft directly to get the console repaired (I somehow doubt though Microsoft are going to refund me the price of the game their console ****ed).

I presume you haven't used your other discs since then for fear of scratching them. I know it's not answering your question, but you should stick a useless CD (like an free internet trial CD or something) in your 360 and see if it scratches it. That'll rule out the disc itself it if does. You can hear it, it's a very unpleasant noise.

Place console horizontal, like a vcr .Not standing straight up,i think its more likely to scratch if its in vertical ,standing position.LOOK ,AT any pc,all the dvd drives are set sideways, across, they dont have dvd/cdrom drives going straight up ,cos unless unless everything is perfectly balanced at high speed ,theres a chance of disc scratching.AT HORIZONTAL ,disc is stabilized by gravity.Bring gow back to shop, they may replace it if they remember you,or if you still have the receipt.

Both of my 360's are lying vertical and haven't had a single problem with either of them scratching discs. A lot of people here also have their consoles vertical with no trouble to their games

According to MS, all eports of disc scratching have nothing to do with the console.
They say that every call they get about scratched discs, it winds up being either the disc, or the Console being moved while a disc is in the machine.

I'm not saying it's not your machine, just that MS say it's not.;)

I've seen a few reports of scratched/broken GoW discs, so it might just be the game itself. But I'd suggest trying another (useless) disc aswell to see if it scratches it, just to be sure it's not the console itself.

Hmm... I work for a retailer that's sold 360's since they came out and to the best of my recollection there was a problem with an early batch of the machines with regard to them scratching discs. I don't work in the games section itself, so I'm not 100% certain about it, but if I were you, I'd bring back my 360 to the retailer and enquire about it,- you may potentially have to get it replaced.

Mines horizontal but I have recently got a problem with my Need For Speed: Carbon.

I get that Disc read error a few times and sometimes the game just stops on loading screens. It's immaculate tho.
Didnt have problems before I completed the game, the day after I completed it it all began to happen. Either its after I completed it or updated it on Live
